Diary of Lights by Adrienne Kennedy:with Lyrics by Sandy Chapin Adrienne Kennedy (bio) and Sandy Chapin (bio) Production History Diary of Lights: New York about 1955 was written by Adrienne Kennedy in 1973 and premiered under the title Diary of Lights: 1954, A New Jazz Musical, 19-20, 22-25 May 1978, at the Jane Addams Theatre located at 3212 N. Broadway in Chicago. Hull House / Columbia College Theatre / Music Center and Paul Carter Harrison were the producers. It was directed by June Pyskacek; the lyrics were written by Sandy Chapin; the music was composed and arranged by Isaiah Sanders; the set design was by Michael Merritt; the lighting design was by Michael Merritt; the costume design was by Kaye Nottbusch; the choreography was by Carol Delk; the technical director was Gerry Stephens; the technical assistant was Bundy Trinz; the assistant to the director was Rodney Sampson; the stage manager was Michael Smith; the director of the costume shop was Yvonne Jackson; and the musical director was Isaiah Sanders. The musicians were as follows: Wallace McMillian (reeds), Alsoncina Lee, Jr. (bass), Kenny Crutchfield (drums), Keith Henderson (guitar), and Isaiah Sanders (piano). It was billed as Diary of Lights: A Musical without Songs and directed by David Willinger, with music by Gib Veconi and choreography by Tracy Hendryx. Margo Aaron and Mel are white. Aisha and Mohammed are from Cairo, Egypt. Each scene is set by larger than life lights that are the replica of the real life lights of New York Places. Most often the colors are yellows pink oranges whites red and purple. The dialogue is collective and almost a song. Their whole youthful summer is a dance and the dances all reflect this.
