Effect Of Prior Heavy-intensity Exercise On The Vo2 On-And Off-kinetic Response To Moderate-intensity Exercise In Young Adults
Notice bibliographique
Résumé
Recently we observed that the VO2 on-transient kinetics during moderate-intensity exercise in young adults were faster after a bout of heavy-intensity, warm-up exercise, however it is not known whether off-transient VO2 kinetics are affected. PURPOSE To examine VO2 kinetics during the on- and off- transition to moderate-intensity exercise before and after a bout of heavy-intensity, warm-up exercise. METHODS Young healthy subjects (n = 10; age 24±3 yrs; mean ± SD) performed 4 repetitions of a MOD1-HVY-MOD2 protocol from 20W to work rates corresponding to 80% of estimated lactate threshold (θL) (MOD1; MOD2), and 50% of the difference between θL and VO2peak (HVY). Each transition lasted 6 min and was separated by 6 min cycling at 20W. VO2 was measured breath-by-breath by mass spectrometry and volume turbine. VO2 data were time-aligned, interpolated and ensemble-averaged to yield a single profile for each subject. The time constant for the fundamental, phase 2, VO2 kinetics (tVO2) was determined using a mono-exponential model and nonlinear regression techniques. RESULTS Without prior HVY warm-up, the τVO2 for MOD1 was greater (P < 0.05) during the on- (37±13 s) compared to the off-transition (30±8 s) to exercise. After HVY warm-up, the MOD2 on-transient τVO2 (25±10 s) was reduced (P < 0.05) compared to that in MOD1 and was less than (P < 0.05) the MOD2 off-transient τVO2 (32±9 s); the off-transient τVO2 for MOD1 and MOD2 were not different. The VO2 amplitudes for the on- and off-transitions to MOD1 and MOD2 were not different. CONCLUSIONS The finding that the VO2 off-transient kinetics were not affected by HVY, warm-up exercise despite a speeding of VO2 ontransient kinetics suggests a different limitation for mitochondrial respiration between the on- and off-transitions to moderate-intensity exercise, and are not consistent with a dynamically linear model of control for on- and off- VO2 kinetics.
