Résumé
This month sees the introduction of a new and regular addition to the front cover. We are adding a photograph to each issue this year to increase the visual impact of the journal cover and, we hope, to make the journal more interesting! We had a number of choices in the planning stages, ranging from reproductions of the works of famous artists (just as JAMA and Academic Medicine do) to the use of original artwork featuring new and talented artists. We chose the use of new work and have commissioned a young photographer from the North of England to work on images for this year. Andy Hollingworth is a photographer based in Chester. He has spent the last 5 years producing a major series of portraits featuring British comedians and comic actors active since 1960. An exhibition of his comedy photographs entitled ‘Funny Ha! Ha!’ toured galleries in England and Wales during 1998/99 and gained much popular and critical acclaim. This project has been the subject of several television and radio programmes and the National Portrait Gallery, Rotherham City Art Gallery and the Picture House Centre for photography have acquired work from it. His images have appeared in numerous magazines, including the journal of the Royal Photographic Society, Practical Photography and Photo Technique. His portrait of David Baddiel was used on the sleeve of his ‘Too Much Information’ video and on the cover of the book No Other Blue published by Penguin. Other subjects featured in Andy’s work include close up images of giraffes, elephants and penguins and the TV icons from his childhood including Gerry Anderson’s ‘Thunderbirds’ and Dr Who’s daleks. He is currently extending his comedians series for a future show at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival and is working towards a retrospective exhibition of his work to be shown at the Grosvenor Museum in Chester. He has chosen a powerful and very thoughtful image, shot on location in the clinical skills centre in Liverpool, to open up his account with us.
