MOTOR UNIT PROPERTIES OF THE ELBOW FLEXORS AND EXTENSORS ARE NOT AFFECTED EQUALLY WITH AGE
Notice bibliographique
Résumé
Aging is generally associated with muscle weakening, contractile slowing, and reduced motor unit (MU) firing rates, however, the extent of these changes are not similar between muscles. To determine whether age-related alterations are similar in an agonist-antagonist muscle pair we compared maximal voluntary isometric strength (MVC), central activation, stimulated contractile properties, and average motor unit (MU) firing rates between the elbow flexors (EF) and elbow extensors (EE) in 6 young (24 ± 1 years) and 6 old (83 ± 4 years) men. Central activation was assessed with the twitch interpolation technique, and MU firing rates were compared at five target forces of 10%, 25%, 50%, 75% and 100% MVC. For both young and old men the EF were stronger than the EE (10% young; 16% old), but contraction duration was slightly faster in the EE compared to the EF (9%). Contractile properties were not slower in the old men compared to the young men, however, there was a significant (p ≤ 0.05) decrease in EF (41%) and EE (51%) strength, which was independent of an alteration in central activation (94–98%). Thus, the relative differences in strength and contractile properties between the EF and EE are not affected by age. However, for MU firing rates the biceps was more affected than the triceps with age, since the MU histogram was leftward shifted in the biceps, not the triceps, and from an average of the five target forces firing rates were less in the biceps (27%) than the triceps (16%). Thus, with age, MU firing rates were not reduced to the same degree in this agonist-antagonist muscle pair. These results suggest that in the EF and EE age-related reductions in MU firing rates occur independent of changes in contractile properties. Perhaps the decline in force control that has been reported to occur in the upper limb with age might be accounted for, in part, by the dissociation of the matching relationship between EF and EE contractile properties and MU firing rates.
