FP1 “Its like Someone Reached in and Squeezed my Heart”: The Disruption of the Lived Body in Men and Women with Cardiac Illness and Concomitant Diabetes

Poster Session 1Purpose: Cardiac disease and its associated co-morbidities not only affect physical health, but also how patients view, experience and relate to their bodies. Through the notion of “embodiment”, these changes are well recognized in the social science literature, but need to be further examined in people with cardiac disease. This study examined perceptions of the body as the site rather than the object of experience in patients who had both cardiac disease and diabetes. Method: The approach of Merleau-Ponty (1962, 1968) was used develop a framework to analyse the embodied experiences of 32 participants (16 men and 16 women) who were participating in cardiac rehabilitation at one of three urban centres in Toronto, Canada. Data collection involved a series of two semi-structured interviews and an activity journal that served to provide further data for the second interview. Results: Through the course of experiencing and managing cardiac disease and diabetes, participants reported a marked shift in how they saw and understood their bodies. Narratives reflected that the body could no longer be viewed as an object to be managed. Instead it was as a lived and connected body that was affected by and interacted with the world. Participants described having new forms of bodily knowing associated with the management and recognition of illness. This was based on a new and more general recognition of the vulnerability of the body, but also on episodes of “spectacular vulnerability”. At the experiential level, the lived body revealed the personal and social effects of biological disruption.
