In the scholastic domain, the terms “Japanese” and “Mormon” have seldom, if ever, been used together. Instead, researchers and the general public alike continue to assume the Mormon Church, officially known as the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS), remains solely a North American faith tradition. More than 175 years after its inception, John Hoffmann seeks to dispel this myth by providing a contemporary portrait of the church through a thorough analysis of the Mormon community in Japan. Starting with historic contextualization of Japanese cultural and religious identities, Hoffmann astutely illustrates some of the shaping exigencies that have both positively and negatively affected how Christianity is phenomenologically and philosophically viewed by its people. In doing so, he begins to address a key issue of the book—whether Mormon and Japanese identities are mutually agreeable or incompatible with one another. Japan, though labeled as highly secularized, is also one of the most religious industrialized nations due to an apparent fogging of religion and culture. This entanglement, according to Hoffmann, is what permits 120,000 Japanese Mormons to reconcile their membership in a foreign—that is, non-Japanese—church. Thus, a noteworthy strongpoint of the book lies in the author's ability to deconstruct (and thus steer clear of) the weaknesses inherent in generalizations of both the Japanese and the LDS by focusing on issues particular to converts and those evangelizing to them: namely, the process of merging the traditional Japanese milieu with a faith originating in North America. Using contexts of religion, family, and society, all conceptualized through the lens of wa, or harmony, readers are led through both the joys and conflicts—vis-à-vis notions of communication barriers and duty—of religious experience. The chapters that focus specifically on Japanese identity delve into issues of identity formation and preservation, and notions of ethnic insularity within the framework of globalization and religiocultural pluralism.
