Résumé
THERE has long been a need for a meticulous and accurate translation of the extraordinarily detailed and highly readable Liber Eliensis, which in its sometimes sprawling and convoluted narrative covers half a millennium of the history of the Isle of Ely from the seventh century onwards. It is not so much that the Latin original is often tricky with regard to meaning, nor that the only edition of the complete text (by E. O. Blake, published in 1962) is now relatively scarce, simply that this is a vigorous and vibrant text which richly deserves the wider audience that a modern English version inevitably promises. This translation is a triumph of painstaking and thorough research, and together with its brief and well-judged Introduction and superbly thorough apparatus of notes and ancillary matter will make a hugely useful companion-volume to the original text even for those who prefer their Latin in Latin. Indeed, given the fact that the source-text is often rather lush, the translator has done an admirable job of conveying the complexities of the original with clarity. Typical is the description of the problems faced by Norman knights besieging the outlaw Hereward and his men, holed up on the Isle of Ely shortly after the Conquest (225): It deterred many to be advancing in armour across marshy ground which would hardly support the footsteps of a man or of any animal. And you could see that it posed threats, easily targeted as it was by an arrow-shot from afar: collapsing like chaos into a whirlpool of solid matter into which, when loosened by the slightest rain, flow in streams and rivers, disguised all the time by the hazardous beds of flag-iris which, in general, marshy ground encourages to grow.
