It is a great honor to deliver the citation for Professor Roger H. Hewins (Fig. 1), member of our society for approximately 40 yr. Roger has a long and distinguished career within the fields of meteoritics and cosmochemistry and has researched on a diverse range of problems within the study of planetary materials. He started off his career, after graduating with a B.Sc. in Geology from Aberdeen University, Scotland as a field geologist for the Geological Survey of British Guiana. After 2 yr in the field, he moved to Canada and worked for a mining company. Shortly thereafter, he began his doctoral research. His first publication in our field, although at the time it was not recognized to be in our field, was in 1972 at the International Geological Congress held in Montreal, Canada. This was on his thesis research, which was focused on the geology of the Sudbury complex, now known as a meteor impact site. After earning his Ph.D. at the University of Toronto, he took a postdoctoral research position with Professor J. I. Goldstein in 1972 and published on problems related to the origin of the Apollo 12 mare basalts and Apollo 16 soils, to name a few projects that he brought to a successful completion. In 1975, Roger joined the faculty at Rutgers University, where he turned his attention to smaller planetary bodies, publishing on the origin and evolution of mesosiderites, howardites, and diogenites. In fact, for a time, his name was synonymous with diogenites. Circa 1980, he turned his attention to primitive planetary materials, specifically chondrules. Investigating the origins of chondrules has clearly been a passion for Roger for over 30 years. Some of his most important contributions to the field of chondrule research started with his seminal review paper of the constraints on chondrule thermal histories published by the NIPR in 1989. A year later, two classic papers were published that established the definitive work on the thermal histories of chondrules as determined through experimental petrology. These papers, co-authored with his graduate student Patrick M. Radomsky, defined what became the bases for the numerical modeling of chondrule formation and such mechanisms as nebular shock waves and current sheets. It was always a major component of Roger's research program to bridge the gap between planetary science and astrophysics to meteoritics and cosmochemistry. He produced one of the earliest publications on the quantitative modeling of chondrule formation and has always been a staunch supporter of strong communications between disciplines. In many ways, his research program and students helped set the stage for today's view and approaches to investigating chondrule formation. Today, his name is synonymous with the thermal history chondrules experienced. Through mentoring of a number of undergraduate and graduate students, one of which is yours truly, almost three decades worth of successful research on chondrules established the foundation for how to investigate chondrule formation. It should be noted that not only has Roger Hewins published on the thermal histories of chondrules, but on subjects relating to their compositions, potential relationships between chondrule composition to that of the Earth's composition, and on the origins and evolution of oxygen isotopes in chondrules. Going emeritus has provided Roger with a new creative freedom to branch back into researching larger bodies, in this case, Mars. At the Institut de Minéralogie, de Physique des Matériaux et de Cosmochimie at the Muséum National d'Histoire Naturelle in Paris, France, Roger continues his passion for researching problems in planetary materials having authored or co-authored several abstracts and refereed papers on the Martian breccia NWA 7533. He continues to push our understanding of geological processes that occurred in planetary materials through his research and collaborations on these Martian rocks. In the opening, I stated that it was my great honor to deliver this citation. In fact, I believe there is no greater honor for a former student than to present his mentor to the society for its highest award, the Leonard Medal. Besides being an excellent mentor, he has been a valued friend my entire career. In addition to the numerous scientific achievements we accomplished together, we have traveled the world to various Meteoritical Society meetings and share a passion for good food, good wine, dining with good friends, and life. Madame President, distinguished members of the society, honored guests, I present to you Professor Roger Herbert Hewins, the 2014 recipient of the Leonard Medal.
