Résumé
It is a great pleasure and honor for us to present this IGEC-III 2007 special issue of International Journal of Energy Research, one of the three special issues of IGEC-III 2007, which consists of 10 peer-reviewed papers selected from IGEC-III, 2007, the Third International Green Energy Conference, held in Västerås, Sweden, on 18–20 June 2007. The conference was organized by the Mälardalen University, Sweden, with co-organizers including The Advanced Energy Systems (AES), the Division of the Canadian Society for Mechanical Engineering (CSME), The Association of Energy Engineers, the International Association for Hydrogen Energy, and the Chinese Society of Engineering Thermophysics, with support from the Swedish Energy Agency, the European Commission, and the Royal Swedish Academy of Engineering Sciences. Following the successful IGEC-I (Waterloo, Canada) in 2005, and IGEC-II (Oshawa, Canada) in 2006, IGEC-III 2007 addressed the extensive topics of the field of green energy, which is multifaceted and involves a broad range of people from a variety of backgrounds. The IGEC-III was designed to cover many disciplines related to green energy such as renewable energy, advanced energy conversion technologies and systems, and environmental impacts of energy utilizations. The organization committee took efforts and passions to provide a range of networking opportunities for all who attended. The conference included eight invited keynote and plenary speakers, over 45 sessions and over 150 contributed papers from about 30 countries. Special workshops, ‘Sweden–China International Workshop on Energy and Climate Change’ organized by the Royal Swedish Academy of Engineering Sciences (IVA), the Chinese Academy of Engineering, and the Mälardalen University, and ‘Trends in Automation’ organized by the Automation Region were also held during the IGEC-III 2007. Plant tours to the bioenergy cogeneration plants (Mälarenergi and ENA Energi), the integrated biogas plant (Växkraft), and ABB Sweden were arranged during the IGEC-III. The preparation of this special issue was indeed an international effort. We would like to express sincere thanks to all the reviewers of this issue who have generously contributed with advice and time to ensure the quality of this publication. We would also like to thank Dr Wei Zhou, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, for his efforts and excellent assistance during the review process of the selected manuscripts.
