Résumé
1University of New Hampshire, Durham, NH 03824; and 2Samuel Lunenfeld Research Institute, Toronto, Ontario, Canada M5G 1X5 Professor Charles E. Warren, a truly outstanding scientist, colleague, and faculty member at the University of New Hampshire, died in a paragliding accident, July 30, 2005, leaving friends, relatives, and colleges saddened by his tragic loss. Charles was educated at the University of Oxford, where he received his D. Phil. in 1990. After graduation, he helped establish one of the first commercially focused efforts in glycotechnology with Oxford Glycosystems, Ltd. He subsequently moved to Toronto to broaden his interest in glycosyltransferases and returned to the fundamental business of science, that of discovery. Charles spent two postdoctoral years with Dr. Harry Schachter, at the Hospital for Sick Children Research Institute in Toronto. He then spent 10 years with Dr. Jim Dennis at the Samuel Lunenfeld Research Institute (Toronto), where he pioneered the glycobiology of Caenorhabditis elegans. He coined the abbreviation “gly” for glycosyltransferase genes in the worm and made seminal contributions to their early functional analyses. Charles moved to the University of New Hampshire in 2002 as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. He resided in Newmarket, New Hampshire on the Lamprey River. Charles had a major impact and lasting impression on very many people, but particularly his students, whom he was proud to see develop as independent thinkers. Charles valued efficiency, and seeing a need, he volunteered to establish and maintain the Society for Glycobiology Web site (http://glycobiology.org), including systems for abstract submission and registration for the Society’s annual meetings. Around this centerpiece portal, the Society evolved from an ad hoc annual gathering to the organizational structure we now know and appreciate. Charles was a friend, colleague, and associate to many people, and his low-key demeanor, ability to integrate the bigger picture and focus beyond the trivia of everyday life was inspiring to all who knew him well. Charles loved the many adventures life offered and lived with optimism and enthusiasm for it all. His extended professional family and friends around the world mourn his tragic loss. The memory of such an adventuresome friend and outstanding scientist will remain with us long into the future.
