Response to Comment on “Delayed Deposition of Organochlorine Pesticides in a Temperate Glacier”
Notice bibliographique
Résumé
SIR: In their comment on our previous paper (1), Gregor and Peters (2) have identified a number of issues and problems related to sampling and interpreting organochlorine pesticide data collected from glaciers. We take the opportunity here to respond to their concerns and comments.Gregor and Peters take exception to our conclusion that "deposition is declining".This comment is puzzling because we use the term "decrease" about the same frequency as "increase" (1).Nevertheless, in ref 1, statistically valid analyses on untransformed data indicated that the concentration of R-HCH in snow and ice was decreasing over time at Snow Dome Glacier. The concentration of HCB increased with time.Donald et at.(1) concluded that long-term changes in flux of both chemicals from the atmosphere to the glacier were responsible for these trends. At least for R-HCH, this interpretation is supported by similar trends identified for air, glacier ice, lake sediment, and river water elsewhere in the Northern Hemisphere (3-7).An increasing trend for HCB deposition was also evident in sediments from a high elevation lake (5213 m above sea level) in the Himalayas (8).Gregor and Peters contend that the depositional patterns at Snow Dome were a function of inadequate sampling, volatilization of chemicals to the atmosphere, transfer of contaminants between annual layers, and inappropriate consideration of flux. After consulting Occam's Razor, we disagree. We agree, however, that extensive melting of surface snow on glaciers could change contaminant concentrations in the immediate and lower annual layers. However, some melting at the surface is advantageous for both sampling and containment of contaminants. At 3100 m above sea level on Snow Dome, the ice layer was not more than 10% of each annual layer and was usually much less.Formation of this ice layer provides a barrier that prevents diffusion of contaminants into other layers in following years. Most important, however, if significant summer melting occurs at high elevation in some years, the ice layer would prevent
