Résumé
The June 2013 issue of the Journal of American History begins the one hundredth volume of what was, until June 1964, the Mississippi Valley Historical Review. The “Historical News and Comments” section of that June 1964 issue, renamed the Journal of American History, informed readers that “with a change in name goes a change in format. … A smoothly finished Navajo tan cover trimmed flush with the pages has replaced an overhanging cover of Nile green. … Type rearrangement for the front material, including the venerable steamboat, and the addition of a title page are also distinguishing features of The Journal of American History” (p. 166). We have the entire run of the MVHR and the JAH in our office, and I was curious to browse through the first issue, published in June 1914. Clarence W. Alvord was the managing editor, assisted by an eight-man board of editors. There were four articles: E. C. Barker's “The United States and Mexico, 1835–1837”; C. R. Fish's “Review of McMaster's History of the People of the United States”; J. A. James's “Louisiana as a Factor in American Diplomacy, 1795–1800”; and S. J. Buck's “Historical Activities in the Old Northwest and Eastern Canada, 1913–1914.” The “Notes and Documents” section of the issue offered “The Lost Burr Papers”; “Newly Discovered George Rogers Clark Material”; “George Washington to His Brother Charles”; and “Trumbull Correspondence.” There were forty book reviews, and the “News and Comments” section announced “A new Magazine!” Readers were assured that “the venture has not been entered upon thoughtlessly or in the spirit of bravado, for the subject has been under consideration by the Mississippi Valley Historical Association for two years and by members of the fraternity of western historians for a still longer time” (p. 157). Approximately fifty historians were asked for their advice, and most were “very encouraging” (p. 158). The new journal, readers were told, would be “devoted to the promotion of research in the history of the valley, the limits of which will be considered as extending from the Appalachian to the Rocky mountains; and attention will be given to the surrounding regions in so far as they have been historically connected in the westward movement” (ibid.). (I am tempted to write more about these early issues, but readers will be better served by the fine essays in Richard S. Kirkendall's edited collection, The Organization of American Historians and the Writing and Teaching of American History (2011).
