Résumé
George R. Rapp, fondly known as Rip, personifies the discipline of geoarchaeology-employing geological methods and theories to help solve archaeological problems and understand our human past.This issue of Geoarchaeology: An International Journal includes six articles written specifically in honor of Rip's enduring commitment to the research and teaching in the application of earth science to archaeology.Rip earned his BA in geology and mineralogy from the University of Minnesota in 1952, and PhD in geochemistry from Pennsylvania State University.His early professional interest in earth science was influenced by John Gruner (a mineralogist), Sam Goldich (a chemical petrologist), and Herb Wright (a Quaternary geologist) at the University of Minnesota, as well as O. F. Tuttle (a chemical geologist), J. V. Smith (a crystallographer), and Rustum Roy (a materials scientist).Rip's conversion to geoarchaeology occurred in 1966 when William A. McDonald, the late Regents' Professor at the University of Minnesota, invited him to join the Minnesota Messenia Expedition as associate director.Since then, he has carried out a wide variety of research programs in geoarchaeology involving sites and regions in Greece, Cyprus, Turkey, Egypt, Israel, Tunisia, and China, as well as Minnesota.Rip has been instrumental in promoting the application of scientific techniques and methods to the solution of archaeological problems, particularly in the Mediterranean.Rip's zealous endeavor has resulted in many books and articles, dealing with a wide range of aspects of the scientific applications into archaeological research.His active teaching career has cultivated a group of researchers committed to following his example of enriching our archaeological understanding of the human past by means of natural scientific methods.Rip's extraordinary academic career has earned him several national awards from various professional communities.The first Archaeological Geology Award of the Geological Society of America went to him in 1984 in recognition of his devotion in creating the Division of Archaeological Geology, and for his achievements in the promotion of a unique area of interdisciplinary research at the interface between geology and archaeology.In 1993, the award was officially renamed the "Rip Rapp Archaeological Geology Award" in honor of Rip's contribution to geoarchaeology).He also received the Pomerance Award of the Archaeological Institute of
