Cholesterol and Beyond: The Research on Diet and Coronary Heart Disease, 1900-2000 By A. Stewart Truswell
Notice bibliographique
Résumé
The decline in the incidence of and rate of mortality due to coronary heart disease (CHD) beginning in the 1960s has been a major public health accomplishment. Many epidemiologists have spent much of their careers investigating both the determinants of CHD and the factors that accounted for this decline in CHD occurrence. Nutritional variables and their effects on blood lipoprotein levels and possibly thrombosis are central to the epidemiology of CHD. A. Stewart Truswell has written a very informative and at the same time entertaining and highly readable account of the nutritional epidemiology of CHD from the beginning to the end of the 20th century. This book is different from textbooks about cardiovascular nutrition and epidemiology. First, it is written by an investigator not from the United States and focuses much more on research in other countries. Several important US studies, such as the National Diet Heart Study, the International Atherosclerosis Project, the primate feeding experiments by Robert W. Wissler, Thomas Clarkson, and Henry McGill, and the nutrition epidemiology studies in Chicago (by Jeremiah Stamler et al.) and Cleveland (by Irving Page and Helen Brown) are not included. However, the conclusions of the book are consistent with current recommendations and emphasize the primary role of saturated and polyunsaturated fat in the diet. Second, the book focuses more on traditional classic experimental nutritional epidemiology in both human and animal models, the natural experiments of geographic and temporal variations, and clinical trials than it does on observational epidemiology.
