Résumé
The International Union of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (IUBMB) began publication of IUBMB Life in July 1999. It was the successor to our 19-year-old journal, Biochemistry and Molecular Biology International, which published short research communications. The change to a new journal, with a new title, was meant to coincide with a change in policy. Henceforth IUBMB Life would publish not only research communications, but also critical reviews at the cutting-edge of advances in biochemistry and molecular biology, and hypotheses, as well as recurring feature articles, some of which have become regular, almost monthly, contributions, as well as opening a window on IUBMB and its workings, including a calendar of IUBMB sponsored events. In making this change we set new criteria for the research communications, namely that they should be “extremely novel, short but complete and of broad interest to experimental biologists in biochemistry, molecular biology, cell biology and molecular medicine. Original research articles must provide new biological insights that warrant rapid publication.” We were aware that by the strict application of these criteria we were unlikely, at least initially, to receive sufficient acceptable short communications to fill a monthly issue, but this was not a major concern because of the other new contents of the journal, notably the reviews, would together, we felt sure, make an appealing package to the readership we hoped to acquire. In the subsequent eight-and-a-half years, our goals have been met. We now have a very visible Impact Factor of 2.31 which increases with every year. In all this we are sustained by a simply splendid Board of Editors, who, in line with IUBMB policy, represent a truly international mix, and by dedicated expert editorial assistants to help our everyday editorial work. We have evolved along the way. We regularly feature special issues devoted to the themes of the IUBMB Congresses and Conferences, and we are succeeding in our aim to be the flagship journal of the Union. Our original publisher was Taylor and Francis, later to become part of the Informa Group. At all levels they have been quite splendid colleagues, working with us to ensure a publication of high quality and punctuality, and took us into the electronic age with Manuscript Central. But the time has come to say goodbye to them, parting with the utmost gratitude for their support during all these years. We have a new publisher as from January 2008, John Wiley and Sons Inc., who already publish our sister journal, Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Education. That acquaintance has made us already familiar with our new colleagues and we are confident that with their cooperation and professionalism IUBMB Life is destined to continue on its upward trajectory, and take on a new lease of life.
