Editors, reviewers and the work of the editorial board

The editorial board has changed this year with the retirement as co-editor of Lluis Ferrer to whom we are very grateful for his hard work for the journal over several years and for his support of the editorial board. I am pleased to announce the appointment of Dan Morris and Mandy Burrows as new co-editors and I look forward to working with them. Dan Morris is the head of the veterinary dermatology service at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, USA, and has experience of reviewing articles from a wide variety of journals including many veterinary titles. He has published many articles particularly on staphylococcal infections in companion animals and the role of house dust mites in canine allergic skin disease. Mandy Burrows, like Dan Morris, is a very experienced clinician and is based at Murdoch University in Western Australia. She has been working with vets studying for postgraduate qualifications in Australia and New Zealand. She has reviewed articles for this journal for many years. Three years ago this journal moved from the Editorial Manager software system of electronic submission to ScholarOne Manuscripts (previously called Manuscript Central). Since that change we have had 279 reviewers contribute their expertise to the journal. I would like to take this opportunity to offer my gratitude to the reviewers and to give them due recognition for their contributions to the journal; the names of the reviewers are listed below. Most are listed on the ScholarOne system with full first names, a few have provided initials. Each reviewer is encouraged to offer areas of specialist interest and expertise within the ScholarOne system; this information can be very helpful to the co-editors when it comes to choosing reviewers. I would like to encourage all of our reviewers to keep their areas of expertise and their profile within ScholarOne up to date. Our co-editors dealt with over 300 manuscripts during 2011 and 2012; the types of submission are given in the table below. 2011 # Manuscripts (%) 2012 # Manuscripts (%) Manuscripts come from a large number of countries; for example in 2012 148 were submitted and they originated from the United States 52 (32%), Japan 13 (8%), United Kingdom 13 (8%), Brazil 9 (6%), Germany 8, Switzerland 8, France 7, Italy 6, Korea 6, Iran 4, Turkey 4, three each from Australia, Poland and Spain; two each from Canada, China, Egypt and Portugal; one each from Austria, Belgium, Finland, Grenada, Hungary, India, New Zealand, Netherlands, Nigeria, Serbia, Slovakia, Sweden, Taiwan and Thailand. In recent years we have received and published more letters and this is partly due to the number of case reports; although a popular form of submission not all of them are suitable for publication as case reports and so some are converted into letters. Of the articles published the reviews are particularly popular in terms of downloads. Readers may be interested to know that in 2012 the top 10 articles in terms of downloads were as follows: It will be noted that some of these articles were reviews submitted by the International Committee on Allergic Diseases of Animals (ICADA) and they have recently launched their website: http://www.icada.info. The ICADA is an affiliated organisation of the journal; many of the ICADA articles are provided as open access.
