Force limited vibration testing applied to the CASSIOPE spacecraft
Notice bibliographique
Résumé
CASSIOPE is a small Canadian spacecraft carrying two payloads: the enhanced polar outflow probe payload consisting of eight scientific instruments, and the Cascade payload, a high-speed Ka-band communication technology demonstrator. As part of the environmental test campaign, the spacecraft was subjected to sine vibration testing for qualification, and to random vibration testing for workmanship verification. The force limited vibration (FLV) approach was utilized for the random vibration tests. The control strategy for the random tests combined force and response limiting. For the lateral axes, the rms value of the input force was reduced by more than 60%, primarily from force limiting at the fundamental frequencies of the spacecraft. The input specification was notched by as much as 20 dB at the fundamental frequency. For the thrust axis, the rms value of the input force was reduced by 50%, primarily because of response limiting. The large amount of input notching observed for the CASSIOPE spacecraft, through the combination of force and response limiting, is a consequence of the overall test strategy used in this program, and is significantly greater than that typically obtained during random vibration of flight hardware. The use of FLV for testing the CASSIOPE spacecraft constitutes a milestone in the implementation of the approach in the Canadian space program. The objectives of this paper are (i) to describe this unique application in Canada of force limiting technology, (ii) to present the key results of this FLV testing, and (iii) to provide some insights into the decision-making process that led to these results. The focus of the paper is the random vibration testing and results. A section of the paper addresses the use of force sensors for limiting the input load to the spacecraft during sine vibration.
