Résumé
The first volume of Libertas Mathematica was issued in the Summer of 1981. It contains papers authored by mathematicians of Romanian descent, with the single exception of an author, associated with us, born in the former Soviet Union. The decision to start the publication of this journal in the Diaspora came after we realized that the number of expatriate mathematicians from Eastern Europe, who had left their countries between 1950-1980, had reached impressive numbers. Most of them obtained new positions in the universities of Western Europe and North America (U.S. and Canada), but some found a new life in Israel, South America, Africa, Australia or New Zealand. Practically, they spread over all continents, and this is true even for those leaving Romania. As a member of the American Romanian Academy of Arts and Science, I had the idea to put the publication of Libertas Mathematica under the auspices of this institution, which reunited at the time a good number of academics, writers, artists and other intellectuals of Romanian extraction. My proposal presented to the General Assembly of the Academy, at the Annual Congress of 1979, received a warm reception from the members, and I was entrusted with the publication of the Libertas Mathematica (without financial support from the Academy). Having the formal approval for publication, as well as some promises coming from colleagues who were already in the Western World, the year 1980 was dedicated to the organizational procedures and gathering of manuscripts for the first volume. The first action started in January 1980, at the AMS Annual Meeting, held in San Antonio. Taking into consideration the facts that caused the migration of so many mathematicians from Romania towards other countries, I have collected 100 signatures from members of the AMS, present at the meeting, on a protest letter addressed to the President of Romania, for the destruction of the Institute of Mathematics of the Romanian Academy, together with its branches in Iasi and Cluj-Napoca.
