American Meat Science Association Joins the Animal Frontiers Family

It is hard to believe that just a short 15 months ago, the American Society of Animal Science (ASAS), European Federation of Animal Science (EAAP), and the Canadian Society of Animal Science (CSAS) published the first issue of the first global animal science review magazine. At the time, we were excited about the project and felt sure that it would fill an important gap in our communications both within and outside of animal sciences. But launching a magazine or a journal is risky business, so our goals were modest! Fifteen months later, we have exceeded all of our goals! Animal Frontiers is delivered to approximately 50,000 scientists per issue, and about 5,000 scientists and consumers view the magazine monthly. As of July 2012, Animal Frontiers is accessed and used by more than 25,000 unique users per issue. Animal Frontiers is open access with no page charges. We had hoped to fund with a little advertising and sponsorship. Today, we boast over 20 sustaining partners, sponsorship, and a large range of industry-advertising partners. The first issue was met with praise for the quality of science, setting a high bar. We can honestly say each issue has sustained and often exceeded the quality of the previous issue. We wanted to ensure a global, integrative approach. Each issue focuses on worldwide approaches with international collaborations and truly global authorship. Animal Frontiers began with the collaborative efforts of ASAS, EAAP, and CSAS, but our greatest hope was that over time other “animal science” organizations would join our collaborative efforts. We are excited to announce the addition of the American Meat Science Association (AMSA) to the Animal Frontiers family. Like ASAS, AMSA began in the U.S. and has historically been a U.S. member-based organization. With changes in the global market place and animal science focus in the last 20 years, AMSA has become increasingly international. It is more than fitting that AMSA join our international group of animal scientists at Animal Frontiers. We are excited to see the unique perspective added by a global professional society focused on the products side of animal agriculture. The first issue of Animal Frontiers featuring input from AMSA is focused on the science of high quality protein production and the art of cooking associated with utilizing these products. To ensure that AMSA entered our group with a “bang,” the guest editors of this issue are long-term members of AMSA, ASAS, and EAAP: Steven Lonergan and Elisabeth Huff-Lonergan of Iowa State University. Please join me in welcoming AMSA to our global community!
