HOMMAGESordon Wallace Robb was born July 7 th , 1923, and passed away peacefully at St. Boniface Hospital in Winnipeg on June 4 th , 2012, just short of his 89 th birthday.Gordon was born and raised in Winnipeg and attended Kelvin High School, and after graduation he enlisted with the Royal Canadian Air Force.In service with the RCAF during World War II, he spent two and a half years in England, and upon his release in 1946, he accepted the Canadian Government's offer, as did many of his fellow service men and women, to obtain a university education.No doubt his Boy Scout experiences and summers spent at the family cottage in a wilderness setting at Farlane in the Kenora District of north-western Ontario sparked his interest in forestry as a career.Gordon's involvement during the summers of 1938 through 1941, and 1946 guiding and fighting forest fires in northwestern Ontario probably also contributed to his decision to go into forestry.Gordon graduated in 1949 with his BScF from the University of New Brunswick.Upon graduation, and at the age of 26, he returned to Manitoba to begin his career with the Manitoba Department of Mines and Resources, Forest Service.The first full Provincial Forest Inventory was initiated in 1950, and Gordon was sent to northern Manitoba as part of the inventory crew.During his time in the north he became interested in working with the forest industry, in particular the operations of Spruce Products Ltd., a sawmilling and pulpwood Brokerage Company.He left the employ of the Manitoba Forest Service and began work with the company in 1951, initially as a forester responsible for cruising, establishing timber sales and pulpwood permit locations for the company's operations in northern and western Manitoba.Subsequently, Gordon held the position of Timber Contract and Sales Manager in Winnipeg where he was responsible for purchasing pulpwood for customers in Manitoba, Ontario and the United States.As the demand for pulpwood declined, his responsibilities also included the acquisition and sale of timber products for existing and new mines developing in the province.Gordon worked 35 years for Spruce Products Ltd., retiring in
