Résumé
Levy, Evonne and Mills, Kenneth (eds.) (2013) Lexikon of the Hispanic Baroque: Transatlantic Exchange and Transformation, University of Texas Press (Austin, TX), x + 352 pp. $75.00 hbk. Increasingly scholars of many disciplines have embraced the concept of the Atlantic World realising that, after 1492, it is impossible to study either side of the Ocean in isolation. The editors of this volume have taken this trans-Atlantic approach and applied it to the Baroque period with an emphasis on the transfer of knowledge, animals, people, food, culture, ideas among other elements within the Hispanic world. Instead of the traditional approach of an anthology, they have organised their work as a lexicon – that is to say a book with entries arranged alphabetically. It is not meant to be encyclopedic nor to cover every single aspect of the transfers between Spain and its colonies but there are certainly enough topics to provide either an overview or an introduction to a great many subjects. The organisation follows a pattern: each subject is covered first for Spain and then for Spanish America by different specialists (in most cases although in one case the two entries are by the same scholar). Some letters of the alphabet are missing while others, such as the letter ‘C’ are extremely well represented. The topics chosen for this book are not meant to be exhaustive or complete but do, I believe, to some extent reflect the editors' interests. For example, religious matters including Afterlife, Church Interiors, Clergy, Confession, Convents, Inquisition, Mission, Religious Music, Prophecy and Religious Drama as well as Sin, Sodomy and the Supernatural are all explored but there are no entries that reflect a concern with gender. Yet I would not characterise the particular themes in the book as a weakness but rather, as idiosyncratic. The strength of such an approach is that the editors found really exceptional scholars to write their entries and they seem to have followed the path of intellectual interests rather than trying to be comprehensive. The virtue of such a strategy is clear when confronted such fascinating entries such as Center, Dream, Knowledge and Living Image to name just a few. This book is also beautifully produced and lushly illustrated; it is a true pleasure to leaf through the pages and to examine the many images that are interspersed within its pages. It would be a mistake, however, to allow the appeal of the illustrations to overshadow the intellectual content of the entries and of the excellent introduction that really problematises the Baroque era. This book is a great resource and should find its way into libraries and reading rooms as well as the personal collections of specialists of the Atlantic World.
