The After and Beyond Spinal Cord Injury Resource Manual. This book is an educational manual designed to provide comprehensive information about multiple aspects of spinal cord injury. The text is easily accessible, as one free copy per person can be ordered over the Internet, by phone, or by mail. For individuals who have Internet access, a complete version of the book is also available online, and is extremely easy to use by clicking on a specific chapter and negotiating through the chosen information. The manual contains a basic introduction, a local directory, a section describing the fundamentals of a spinal cord injury, and a segment of biographies of people living with some form of injury to the spinal cord. The local directory does have a link to a few online resources, but is mainly comprised of organizations based in Canada, and therefore may not be useful to the American consumer. The pages providing background on the nature of spinal cord injury give a good overview using easily understood terminology in describing sensory and motor level classification, types of injuries, and key functional goals, with detailed illustrations on each topic. While the biographies following are an interesting way to depict life after injury, the lengthiest entry of the 8 contains a large amount of negative information regarding the personal hardship leading to overall triumph of one individual. The story is interesting, yet may be overwhelming for newly injured persons to read. Following the introductory sections, there are 13 chapters covering a wide variety of issues related to the diagnosis. All chapters include a concise foreword stating that the manual is not meant to offer or substitute for medical advice, rather is designed to promote increased self awareness and facilitate access to multiple resources. The opening sections deal with more medically based issues including Bladder Management, Bowel Management, and Sexual Health. Common preventative solutions, potential complications, and management options are reviewed with focus on achieving optimal quality of life. The subsequent chapters on Health and Wellness and Recreation and Exercise provide an in-depth summary of self-care strategies such as nutrition needs, exercise options, and fulfilling leisure or sport opportunities. In each chapter, descriptions of the subject using understandable yet detailed language are enhanced with a variety of illustrations for increased clarity. For quick reference and further explanation, a glossary completes each chapter to define terms that are medically based or may be foreign to the reader. The chapters that follow on Financial Planning, Self Advocacy, Attendant Management, and Employment and Education are focused only on Canadian resources, and do not contain information specifically applicable to United States residents due to differing government agencies, available programs, and insurance benefits. The remaining sections on Home Modifications, Transportation, and Mobility Aides provide an extremely comprehensive summary of multiple areas including options for mobility, ranging from basic daily needs to advanced technological devices, and standards for adaptation to the home or vehicle for increased independence. Detailed pictures and a glossary complement each chapter for improved comprehension. Overall, this manual provides an excellent overview synthesized in an organized fashion that allows the consumer to access the most pertinent information for his or her needs. Some of the information is applicable only to residents of Canada, and the contents may be too basic for a medical practitioner. This resource will be most useful to individuals with spinal cord injury and their family members as an educational tool and source to promote awareness about the diagnosis. Lauren C.
