Experimental study of multiphase flow with a one-dimensional Shack-Hartmann wavefront sensor
Notice bibliographique
Résumé
The study of multiphase ∞ow involving a liquid and a gas are of great interest for the industry. The physical reactions between difierent ∞uids in a pipe involve the creation of ∞uid ∞ow patterns. One of the limitations while studying those interactions in the laboratory is the afiectation of the ∞ow conditions while using intrusive methods. The application of the wavefront sensor in the study of ∞ow between two phases is a new technique that need to be developed yet. This is a non-intrusive technique that may improve the understanding of the development of the ∞ow in a pipe. With the wavefront sensor we are able to study all the area inside the pipe. For bubble ∞ow in particular this means the possibility of characterize the interactions and reactions between bubbles at difierent ∞ow conditions. A multiphase ∞ow facility has been built to allow the use of optical techniques for its study, with a visualization area formed by a 10-foot acrylic pipe. The ∞uids are all transparent so a non-invasive optical imaging technology can be used. The optical system consists of a single-view Shack-Hartmann optical wavefront sensor, and the eventual goal of the research facility is the application of multiple Shack-Hartmann wavefront sensors to an optical tomography system capable of imaging cross sections of the ∞ow at 5,000 frames per second. With the use of tomography the dispersed phases can be identifled, and their size and concentration distribution along the ∞ow can be evaluated.
