Wonderful to Behold: A Centenary History of the Lincoln Record Society, 1910–2010, by Nicholas Bennett
Notice bibliographique
Résumé
This hundredth volume of the Lincoln Record Society (LRS) chronicles the first century of its own activities. It is at once an account of an institution for itself and also a case-study of an important strand in English historiography. The use and value of local evidence as part of more general and shared historical investigation and understanding has been central to the LRS from the outset. This is eloquently emphasised in Alexander Hamilton Thompson’s 1935 obituary (p. 80) of Canon Charles Wilmer Foster, founder and linchpin of the Society for its first twenty-five years. Foster’s, and the Society’s, purpose was to make accessible ‘the wealth of historical material contained in the collections of the [Lincoln] diocese and other records’. To this task he brought an ‘acute critical intelligence and a passion for tracing each detail to its ultimate source and cause’, together with an appreciation of both ‘the local and parochial importance of his material’ and of ‘its value in illustrating and enriching the history of the nation in general’. Foster combined ‘the spirit of the antiquary to whom no fact is insignificant with the mind of the historian who assembles such facts with a proper sense of their connected meaning and relative value’. This made Foster and the Society pioneers in the ‘work of demonstrating the dignity of local history and archaeology as a necessary part of historical study’. Nicholas Bennett, the present general editor, tracks in seven chapters the aspirations and disappointments, the personalities and mundane practicalities, the distractions and achievements of the LRS. Substantial appendices list members since 1910, and detail each of the published volumes, with contents list and brief description.
