A Unique Meeting Pay Attention to the Interdisciplinary Subjects Around Orthopedics

The 2014 Jishuitan Orthopaedic Forum (JOF) was held from April 25 to 27 in China National Convention center. More than 3000 people attended this forum that includes 33 foreign experts. More than 300 articles were presented. The Jishuitan Forum is held every 2 years; this year is the fifth Jishuitan Forum. The Jishuitan Forum is the only international conference on interdisciplinary subjects around orthopedics. If you want to exchange information on problems of general surgery, internal medicine, and diagnosis using magnetic resonance imaging and B-Ultrasound Diagnostic System for your orthopedic patient, the JOF is your choice. The JOF not only focuses on orthopedics but also pays attention to the related disciplines such as perioperative medicine, general surgery, anesthesia, musculoskeletal ultrasound imaging, laboratory medicine, computer-assisted surgery, and physician-patient relationship. The theme of multidisciplinary collaboration was first proposed by Prof Tian, the President of JST Hospital, which promotes the research and communication of orthopedic-related interdisciplinary subjects. With the accelerated pace of aging of society, there are more and more high-energy injuries and a variety of complications. The concept of treating a patient as a whole person is more and more important. In addition to improving surgical techniques and diagnostic skills, orthopedic surgeons need to co-operate with other physicians to treat the patient holistically. For example, a patient admitted to the hospital due to fracture may also experience heart disease, diabetes, or kidney disease. Therefore, we should not only consider the safety of orthopedic surgery, but also effectively control and even reduce the risk of other diseases. This situation has attracted worldwide attention currently. The 2014 Jishuitan Forum has 2 main branches, the JOF, with 12 sessions that include 271 presentations; and 7 other related disciplines that have 87 presentations, which is 24.3% of all the presentations (Figure 1, Table 1). The number of presentations at the JOF in each session is trauma, 30; oncology, 8; pediatrics, 7; spine surgery, 36; joint surgery, 34; basic research, 17; nursing, 29; hand surgery, 41; sports medicine, 42; pathology—bone and soft-tissue tumors, 5; osteoporosis, 17; and orthopedic extracorporeal shock wave therapy, 5 (Figure 2). The 7 other related disciplines include perioperative medicine, general surgery, anesthesia, musculoskeletal ultrasound imaging, laboratory medicine, computer-assisted surgery, and physician-patient relationship. The Perioperative Medicine Forum has 28 presentations, which include prevention and management of perioperative complications, perioperative management of patients with medical diseases, perioperative risk assessment of medical disease, diagnosis and treatment of orthopedic symptom-related medical diseases, and benefits and risks of perioperative anticoagulant treatment. The Computer-Assisted Surgery Symposium has 17 presentations, which include the new advance of computer-assisted surgery and it applications on the orthopedic surgical procedures. The Ultrasound Forum has 7 presentations, which focus on the new advances such as interventional musculoskeletal ultrasonography, high-resolution ultrasonography, and ultrasound elastography of musculoskeletal. The Anesthesiology Forum has 6 presentations, which focus on peripheral nerve block for elderly patients undergoing orthopedic surgery and the postoperative multimodal analgesia. The General Surgery Forum has 14 presentations, which focus on the venous thromboembolism prevention and treatment protocol. The Laboratory Medicine Forum has 4 presentations, which focus on venous thromboembolism after orthopedic surgery, diagnosis, treatment and monitor, and diagnosis and therapy of pulmonary embolism.
