Samuel Barber: Historical Recordings 1935-1960. West Hill Radio Archives CD6039 (8 CDs and 1 CD-ROM). This production of Canadian origin is devoted to works of a leading American composer of the Twentieth Century. Barber's creative career spanned a little more than three decades, beginning in the early thirties and being essentially over by 1970. The slow movement of his String Quartet, Op. 11 became celebrated in an enlargement as the Adagio for Strings, which, together with his 1938 First Essay for Orchestra, interested Arturo Toscanini, who programmed them on his NBC Radio broadcasts. The Adagio had a rather inglorious later life as movie music but it effectively distilled the somewhat overwrought musical drama that was Barber's stylistic hallmark. That fondness for emotional lyricism always made him suspect in the eyes of the Modernists--who were grabbing for the saddle before World War II but would not seize it until a decade later--but earned him great popularity with both performers and audiences. Barber's works appealed to conductors. Besides Toscanini, they included Koussevitzky in Boston, Ormandy in Philadelphia, and Rodzinski, Bruno Walter and later Mitropoulos in New York. They are all represented on these CDs, which also include such performers and ensembles as the Curtis String Quartet, the CBS Symphony Orchestra conducted by Bernard Herrmann, and the composer himself. Many of these non-commercial recordings, from both private and broadcast sources, document premieres and other important early performances. The lengthiest work so represented is the radio premiere of Barber's opera Vanessa, as heard on Saturday afternoon, 1 February 1958. The earliest is the First Essay for Orchestra in Toscanini's NBC Symphony broadcast of 5 November 1938, which also included the Adagio for Strings. Albert Spalding's premiere of the Violin Concerto with Ormandy and the Philadelphia Orchestra dates from 7 February 1941, and Serge Koussevitzky's premiere of the first version of the Second Symphony took place on 4 March 1944. Commercial recordings are also included, such as Werner Janssen's RCA Victor recording of the School for Scandal Overture and Rudolf Firkusny's and Gold and Fizdale's Columbia recordings of Excursions and Souvenirs, respectively. Also included are the composer's own recordings of his Medea Suite, Cello Concerto (with Zara Nelsova), and the revised version of the Second Symphony, all made for English Decca in December 1950, and his 1935 RCA Victor recording with the Curtis String Quartet of his setting of Arnold's Dover Beach, in which he is the baritone soloist. …
