Introducing ChemistrySelect! The latest journal from ChemPubSoc Europe offers authors a society-owned venue for all their research results. ChemistrySelect promises to become the strong foundation underpinning the established ChemPubSoc Europe journals. When reaching for lofty heights, it is important to have a solid and wide foundation. This is a simple yet accurate metaphor for ChemistrySelect, the latest journal from ChemPubSoc Europe (www.chempubsoc.eu).1 ChemPubSoc Europe is a group of 16 European chemical societies that together publishes 11 high-quality peer-reviewed chemistry journals (Figure 2). The high-impact general chemistry title, Chemistry—A European Journal is the flagship journal, which is complemented by a suite of specialized titles such as ChemMedChem, ChemSusChem and the European Journal of Inorganic Chemistry. ChemPubSoc Europe also publishes a high-quality open-access journal, ChemistryOpen, to meet the emerging needs of chemists with respect to open-access publishing. To a casual observer, it might have seemed to be a complete portfolio, but as these journals become increasingly popular and thus selective, it became apparent that an additional journal was required to meet the needs of the authors.3 The ChemPubSoc Europe family of journals and their current two-year impact factors (2014 Journal Citation Report): Chem. Eur. J. (5.731), ChemBioChem (3.088), ChemCatChem (4.556), ChemElectroChem (new journal), ChemistryOpen (3.250), ChemMedChem (2.968), ChemPhysChem (3.419), ChemPlusChem (3.026), ChemSusChem (7.657), Eur. J. Inorg. Chem. (2.942), Eur. J. Org. Chem. (3.065). ChemistrySelect was launched in December 2015 to underpin the existing family of ChemPubSoc Europe journals. With a broad scope, covering all topics within the chemical sciences, both widely applicable and specialized, and a focus on scientific rigor and accuracy over perceived importance and impact, ChemistrySelect offers researchers a society-owned quality venue for all their research results. ChemistrySelect is managed by a team of professional editors, heavily supported by an extensive Editorial Board, members of which are profoundly involved in the peer-review process. Headed by three field leaders: Didier Astruc (Université Bordeaux I, France), Hélène Lebel (Université de Montréal, Canada), An-Hui Lu (Dalian University of Technology, China), the Editorial Board is comprised of established and respected experts based around the globe and across all disciplines within the chemical sciences. Articles are evaluated by experts for their scientific accuracy, and reviewers are asked to comment on the quality of the scientific methods, results and conclusions, the citations to prior work, and the general presentation without reference to perceived importance and impact, which are subjective parameters and often highly field-specific. That said, manuscripts describing redundant, duplicate, or obvious science are not considered to be suitable for publication. This is a vital distinction because truly unimportant work offers nothing to the scientific discourse and simply serves to dilute the literature. Indeed, ChemPubSoc Europe, Wiley-VCH, the Editors and the Editorial Board members are all committed to maintaining the integrity of the literature—the Ethical Guidelines for Publication in Journals and Reviews set forth by the European Association for Chemical and Molecular Sciences (EuCheMS) are strictly adhered to, and all manuscripts are screened by anti-plagiarism software upon submission. ChemPubSoc Europe is equally committed to optimizing the publishing process and diminishing the burden on the already strained peer-review system. The ChemPubSoc Europe journals receive thousands of submissions each year and, out of necessity, many are rejected for publication on the grounds of insufficient novelty or impact. In many instances, the efforts of the reviewers and authors go to waste. With ChemistrySelect in place, however, authors who are not successful in publishing in one of the sister journals may be offered the opportunity to transfer their manuscript directly to ChemistrySelect with minimal administrative burden. Editorial Manager, the submission and manuscript tracking system used by all of the ChemPubSoc Europe titles, allows seamless transfer of files and manuscript details between journals, and the Editors of each sister journal are empowered to take decisions on behalf of ChemistrySelect, providing the author with a definitive course of action based on the reviewer reports and allowing them to make an informed choice about whether to transfer to ChemistrySelect. In addition to transferred manuscripts, the journal also receives direct submissions, and as news of the journal spreads, the number is anticipated to grow. ChemistrySelect offers authors a choice of article format: Reviews, Full Papers, and Communications, and authors are encouraged to read the Authors Guidelines, available on the journal homepage: www.chemistryselect.org, for further details on our editorial policies. The submission templates available to authors are the same as those offered by all of the sister journals, making life easier for authors already familiar with the submission process at other ChemPubSoc Europe titles. Articles accepted for publication are processed rapidly; all manuscripts are professionally typeset, and proofs are quickly made available via Editorial Manager to authors for approval. Articles are published online on Wiley Online Library as soon as they are ready with immediate assignment of citation data (volume, issue, page numbers). The emphasis in all of our editorial workflows and processes, both during evaluation and post-acceptance, is on meeting the needs of the author, facilitating publication, and disseminating the work as quickly as possible. ChemistrySelect represents a turning point in the ChemPubSoc Europe story. It now offers a journal for the rapid publication of articles that report accurate research results without reference to importance or impact.
