NASPGHAN 2015 Distinguished Service Award

Kathleen “Kay” J. Motil, MD, PhD, embodies the spirit of the NASPGHAN Distinguished Service award. She has worked tirelessly to improve the lives of the children and built a distinguished career within the realm of pediatric gastroenterology and nutrition. She completed her undergraduate education in biology at Seton Hill University followed by a Doctorate of Medicine at the Medical College of Pennsylvania in 1973. From 1973 to 1976, she finished pediatric residency training at McGill University/Montreal Children's Hospital followed by a Pediatric Gastroenterology and Nutrition fellowship between 1976 and 1980 at Harvard under Richard Grand, MD, Nevin Scrimshaw, MD, and Mary Ellen Avery, MD, including completion of a PhD in Nutritional Biochemistry and Metabolism awarded by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology under the tutelage of Vernon R. Young, PhD, and Hamish N. Munro, MD. She served as an Instructor in the Department of Pediatrics at Harvard 1980 to 1981, and then joined the faculty at Baylor College of Medicine in 1981 where she has continued to the present. Kay is well recognized as an insightful and compassionate clinician researcher and a champion of nutrition education. She has authored 80 peer-reviewed publications and more than 60 chapters including manuscripts on protein metabolism, growth in children with inflammatory bowel disease, Rett syndrome, and lactation. She has received grant support from various sources including the United States Department of Agriculture, International Rett Syndrome Foundation, and the National Institutes of Health. She has served as a peer reviewer for more than 20 journals and grant reviewer for more than 12 funding agencies within the United States, Canada, and abroad. She served as Vice Chair (l994–2000) and Chair (2000–2004) of the institutional review board at Baylor College of Medicine. She has chaired the Nutrition Committee at Texas Children's Hospital since 1993 and has been integral in nutrition training for medical students at Baylor College of Medicine. She has been a member of NASPGHAN for more than 30 years—serving as Chair of the Committee on Training and Education from 1986 to 1987, member of the Executive Council from 1993 to 1995, and Chair of the Ethics Committee from 2006 to 2009. Kay has mentored more than 60 postdoctoral fellows throughout their postdoctoral training. In addition to her service to medicine, Kay has tirelessly and compassionately provided care to the underserved in Houston including countless volunteer hours on behalf of Casa de Esperanza de los Nino's, a safe place for children in crisis due to abuse, neglect, or the effects of HIV. She has never shrunk from advocacy on behalf of vulnerable children in highly publicized court cases of child malnutrition. Kay has been well-recognized throughout her career for academic prowess, integrity, and community service. During medical school, she was inducted into Alpha Omega Alpha and received the Jean Crump Memorial Pediatric Department Award for Excellence in Medical Manuscript Student Career Activity. In 1994, she received the Distinguished Alumna Leadership Award from Seton Hill University for pediatric advocacy based upon her contributions for pediatric research and community service and the Paul Daugherty Award for Volunteer of the Year from Casa de Esperanza de los Nino's in recognition for long-standing advocacy for abused and neglected children and children with AIDS. She was awarded the SAVVY Award by the Houston Chronicle in 2001 for 18 years of voluntary community service and leadership to Casa de Esperanza de los Nino's. In 2004 she received a Humanism in Medicine Award by the Association of American Medical Colleges for an individual who embodies the finest qualities in a teacher of healing. She was a recipient of the Mayor's Volunteer Houston Award f or outstanding volunteer service within Houston. Throughout her academic career and personal life, Kay has touched and improved the lives of the underserved. She exemplifies the key features of a distinguished service career in pediatric gastroenterology and serves as a role model for many pediatric gastroenterologists. She has made significant and lasting contributions to the pediatric gastrointestinal community and to the children with nutritional and gastrointestinal diseases.
