Malabar, Florida. 292pp. Adult and Development: Multicultural Stories, an evocative combination of educational, cultural, sociological, and psychological theory illustrated and supported by literary works, serves double-duty as a cultural studies textbook and literary reader. In this work, Baumgartner and Merriam demonstrate how diverse facets of American culture shape the course. editors utilize the of Neugarten (1976), Tenant and Pogson (1995), and Bee (1996) to argue that both psychological and sociocultural factors, such as race, ethnicity, gender, class, sexual orientation, and able-bodiness, impact development throughout adulthood. various effects of these factors are intimately and powerfully conveyed in some familiar selections, such as Erica Jong's How I got to be Jewish, and in some less recognized but equally poignant and well-wrought pieces, such as Gordon Weaver's Finch the Spastic Speaks. Despite the fact that a seemingly unconnected cavalcade of traditionally marginalized voices speak in this collection, these stories have one commonality; they invite the reader to experience first-hand the trials and triumphs of the protagonists in the stories, and hence, encourage the reader to recognize the subtle, and the not so subtle, cultural and personal differences of others and to see how these experiences are also universally human. selections are organized into six different sections, each one dealing with an integral aspect of adult development. first section raises questions of identity, and it explains how ethnicity, culture, race, and sexual orientation combine during identify formation. Stories in this section address questions of identity including the existence of colorism in the African-American community in Alexis De Veaux's Dear Aunt Nanadine, the importance understanding one's heritage in R.A. Sasaki's A Dictionary of Japanese-American Terms, and the biases one character faces in a predominately Chinese neighborhood regarding a physical handicap in Sucheng Chan's You're Short, Besides. second section, Importance of Work, discusses how various factors influence one's life's work. In Molly Martin's Sweetheart, the protagonist deals creatively and forcefully with daily sexual harassment. Another story, Learning to work by Dale Brown, painfully and systematically demonstrates how a learning disability can have an effect on job performance. stories in the third section, Intimacy, are linked by the common themes of love and relationships. authors examine how sexual orientation, class, culture, and education can affect relationships. In G. Winston James' Church, the gay and HIV positive protagonist seeks love and comfort in his home Southern Baptist church. At the climax of the intentionally ambiguous inner monologue/narrative, the speaker comes to realize that God [is] whatever [makes] you truly happy in life (p. 123), which is affirmed by a resounding Amen! forth section investigates how events such as births and deaths redirect the family cycle.
