Résumé
PURPOSE: Tomorrow’s exercise and health professionals are becoming increasingly aware of the importance of regular moderate to vigorous physical activity (PA) to achieve many desired health benefits. The Exercise is Medicine (EIM) initiative in Canada has been gaining recognition as the leader in promoting exercise prescription in the primary care setting since 2012. Our purpose is to report on the current status, progress, and challenges of the nation- wide effort of bringing Exercise is Medicine Canada (EIMC) to University and College campuses from coast to coast. METHODS: Multi-disciplinary and joint faculty and student run clubs have been forming at an increased rate across Canada under the direction of EIMC national Director, Susan Yungblut. Faculty and student leaders of the initiative were interviewed and asked to report on the barriers and facilitators to establishing formal clubs on their respective campuses. RESULTS: Most EIMC On-Campus clubs report having hosted a symposium that creates awareness of the EIM initiative and the importance of regular PA on health, as well as events that involve getting students physically active. Some clubs reported having pilot programs in place in their student health center with a goal of educating campus health professionals on how to effectively discuss and prescribe sufficient patient PA with referral to local campus resources. At this time, barriers to formal club status primarily involve a lack of funding and limited space in medical school curriculums to discuss exercise prescription. Clubs are predominately forming under the direction of students in the health and exercise sciences, such as, kinesiology and rehabilitation programs. CONCLUSIONS: The success stories of well established campus chapters can be of value to graduate students, undergraduate students, medical students, and faculty in other institutions to create awareness of the EIM initiative. Students of exercise physiology, psychology, and health promotion should branch out and find support within the community and amongst medical and other health professional students and faculty at their institution.
