Gisela Pösges is well known among the members of the Meteoritical Society for doing an excellent job in the Rieskrater-Museum (RKM), which was the first of its kind in Europe (http://www.rieskrater-museum.de/index.php/de/) and is now the most recognized European museum devoted to impact research. Not only among impact scientists but also in the much larger planetology and geology communities, the RKM has a legendary reputation for being highly informative; the acknowledgment of “impacts” as an important geological process in Germany is intimately connected to the existence of this institution. Gisela earned her diploma in geology and paleontology in 1988 at the University Bonn, and joined the team of the Rieskrater-Museum in 1990. In 2003, Gisela was appointed as deputy director of the Rieskrater-Museum. Since 1992, she has been head of the geology section in the context of the Rieser Kulturtage (organization of scientific sessions and excursions; http://www.rieser-kulturtage.de/). Between 2006 and 2009, she chaired the study group “geology” within the frame of the German National Geopark Ries. Gisela was the representative of the city of Nördlingen in the ZERIN (Zentrum für Rieskrater- und Impaktforschung Nördlingen; center of Ries crater and impact research Nördlingen) and still takes care of this institution. ZERIN is home for the collection of Ries drill cores and hosts facilities for workshops, lectures, and some laboratory work. ZERIN was and is in use by various universities, and the European Science Foundation (ESF) for summer schools, for laboratory work in the context of excursions, and for amateur geologists. I just want to emphasize some other important activities of Gisela which have been—and still are—serving the members of the Meteoritical Society. They include organization and guiding geological excursions in the Ries crater for students from universities at Berlin, Bonn, Cologne, Erlangen, Freiburg, Hamburg, Jena, Karlsruhe, Kiel, Leipzig, Mainz, Muenster, and Munich (all Germany); Amsterdam (the Netherlands); Bern, Zurich (Switzerland); Bruxelles (Belgium); Glasgow, London, Manchester (UK); Praha (Czech Republic); and Graz and Vienna (Austria)—I am sure that this list is incomplete—as well as excursions with people enrolled in adult education centers, and amateurs. Unknown to the international community are her continuous efforts in transferring results of impact research to laymen, to elementary schools pupils and grammar school students, tourists, and even more importantly, the various government institutions in Bavaria. Gisela provided substantial support in organization of national and international scientific meetings and workshops, e.g., several events sponsored by the ESF Network on Impact Research; AMICO 2000 (Asteroids, Meteorites, Impacts and their Consequences); LMI 2003 (Large Meteorite Impacts); Nördlingen 2010: The Ries crater, the Moon, and the Future of Human Space Exploration, and quite important, the biennial Paneth-Kolloquium for young European planetologists. My estimate is that more than two-thirds of European students in the field of planetary science have participated either in a “Ries excursion” or a Paneth-Kolloquium. Another important field was and is mentoring of diploma and master theses (most recent example: remote sensing of the mega-block zone of the Ries crater with the HRSC camera in combination geological mapping for obtaining the ground truth data—universities Muenster and Freiburg) and assistance in field work in various other projects (e.g., Ph.D. thesis G. R. Osinski, University of New Brunswick, Canada). To summarize, Gisela not only spent a lot of effort establishing the RKM as such a very important “technical node” for planetology but she has also been even more recognized in the impact community for unselfish support of young researchers and well-established scientists working in the Ries. All the visitors have shared the hospitality of Gisela, and have enjoyed the unique combination of field work, museum trips, and laboratory work in the ZERIN. The more senior members of the Meteoritical Society certainly remember the LMI 2003 meeting with tropical temperatures, again with Gisela in charge of the (successful) local organization, and younger ones the “Ries-Exkursion 2004,” when Gisela guided us to a small trattoria to cheer the team of Greece as surprise European football champion. All scientific visitors of the Ries impact crater esteem Gisela's competence in diverse topics that span from guidance in field campaigns over organization of midsize international conferences to spontaneous support of thirsty students working in a hot and dusty Ries quarry with cold six-packs of Bavarian beer.
