ASCP's 40 Under Forty program shines the spotlight on 40 highly accomplished pathologists, pathology residents, and laboratory professionals under age 40 who have made significant contributions to the profession and stand out as the future of laboratory leadership. More than 100 pathologists and laboratory professionals applied for the 2016 ASCP 40 Under Forty program. Individuals were asked to submit a resume and write a personal statement addressing how they see themselves as a leader or becoming a leader within the profession. The Top Five 40 Under Forty honorees were selected based on each honoree's blog entries and Twitter posts, members' online votes, and the Selection Committee's final evaluations. Each of the five will receive free registration to attend the ASCP 2016 Annual Meeting in Las Vegas, a $1,000 stipend toward airfare and lodging, and recognition at the Annual Meeting. In addition, the winners will receive free enrollment in Lab Management University, a collaborative educational initiative of ASCP and the American Pathology Foundation. Here is a look at this year's Top Five honorees: Dr. Arnold is the chief of GI Pathology and associate director of the GI Pathology Fellowship at Ohio State University (OSU) Wexner Medical Center. Dr. Arnold lectures nationally and internationally, has authored 41 papers, and recently published a book titled Atlas of Gastrointestinal Biopsy: A Pattern-Based Approach to Non-Neoplastic Biopsies with Drs. Dora Lam-Himlin and Elizabeth A. Montgomery. Mentorship is a centerpiece of Dr. Arnold's career. She is an ambassador for the United States and Canadian Academy of Pathology and helped found OSU's Pathology Student Interest Group, which now has more than 70 members. Lastly, she is an OSU Learning Community faculty lead, which entails mentoring 12 medical students through their four years of medical school. “I believe one person can change the worldview of another by simply sharing their journey,” Dr. Arnold says. “I owe my career to mentors who showed me the possibilities in pathology when I was a medical student. Now as a pathologist, I look for ways to pay it forward.” Dana Bostic is a certified medical laboratory scientist with more than 14 years of industry experience. Her areas of expertise include (but are not limited to): infectious disease testing, blood banking, staff training, classroom instruction, and laboratory management. Currently, she is employed as a clinical coordinator for the clinical laboratory science program at DeVry University. Her role in higher education has given her the rewarding experience of mentoring the next generation of medical laboratory scientists. “My passion [for] education has driven me to provide quality training and learning experiences for laboratorians,” Ms. Bostic says. “I see myself becoming a leader through advocacy and innovation.” Ms. Campbell is a medical laboratory scientist working in the clinical immunoassay laboratory at the Mayo Clinic. She graduated summa cum laude with a bachelor's degree in medical laboratory science and began a graduate program in clinical laboratory science-molecular diagnostic science track at University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill this fall to obtain additional ASCP certification in molecular biology. Her passion for laboratory medicine and pathology has led to several achievements, including obtaining funding to perform research on the treatment of diabetes mellitus, serving as an ASCP Local Representative, implementing a successful quality improvement project in her laboratory, serving as a member of the Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology Safety Audit Team, and coauthoring two nationally presented research projects. “Through these roles I am educating my peers [about] the benefits of ASCP membership and promoting the profession,” Ms. Campbell says. “I am committed to continued leadership as a Local Representative and becoming a resource to others by escalating my involvement to the national level.” Born and raised in New Jersey, Dr. Wu says she inherited “an eye for patterns” from her parents. She discovered pathology during her surgery rotation in medical school. Enthused by her newfound career choice, she later organized speakers, lab tours, and autopsy shadowing as president of the Pathology Interest Group. Dr. Wu is now on the faculty at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. Her responsibilities are in trainee education and clinical service, including cytopathology, breast and thoracic pathology, and autopsy. She also develops innovative methods for delivering education and has been involved in adaptive e-learning initiatives. “My goal is to lead by example and encourage trainees to pursue active engagement with our professional organizations,” she says. “Collaboration and connections are critical for our success!” Dr. Yu joined Geisinger Health System in December 2010. She is a medical laboratory director who has a system leadership role in clinical chemistry, toxicology, and point-of-care testing. She has experience working with different hospitals and clinics, and integrating them into Geisinger through consolidation and standardization to gain efficiency and improve testing services. Dr. Yu's other main focus is improving laboratory test utilization and workflow efficiency with informatics tools to enhance clinical effectiveness and operational productivity. “As a medical laboratory director, I have a good operational understanding and work closely with the operational and informatics (laboratory information system/ electronic health record) teams,” Dr. Yu says. “This ensures proper alignment between the medical and operational leaders within the laboratory, which is critical to enhanc[ing] our services.” ASCP's 40 Under Forty program made its debut in 2014 and has garnered attention from around the globe. The 40 Under Forty recognition has also made a powerful impact on all of its honorees, ranging from pronounced recognition within their organizations to exciting media attention.
