Résumé
Natacha Gagne (2013) Being Maori in the city: indigenous everyday life in Auckland University of Toronto PressThe author dedicates her book to the 'everyday struggle' of ordinary Maori people in the context of the 'whole history of Maori protests, struggles, affirmation, and resistance ... for Maori rights and autonomy'. These ordinary Maori people live in Auckland, the greater region of which is home to nearly one quarter of the Maori population. In addition, almost 85 percent of Maori live in urban areas, and so Auckland serves as an appropriate context in which to examine everyday Maori life in the city. The author opens the book by taking the reader through a remarkable, collapsed account of political, social, economic and cultural transformations that have occurred for Maori, at a national level, since the 19th century. She pays particular attention to the Foreshore and Seabed conflict, during which the government legislated away the rights of Maori to investigate whether Maori have customary title to the foreshore and seabed. This encounter forms the backdrop for the author's examination of the commonplace struggles of ordinary Maori individuals and whanau living in Auckland. While Auckland is the geographical setting for the story that is told in the book, at the micro level, the focus is the lives whanau in homes in the city. The author argues that these homes 'follow principles of the marae' and provide a space in which 'Maori experiences and affirmation and resistance in the city are supported by the whanau'. Furthermore, in these homes, the author contends, 'the ongoing struggles to re(affirm) Maori identities and preserve aspects of the culture considered important elements of these identities' are negotiated. The daily lives of these whanau are recounted in detail in Chapter 4: Ways of life in a Maori house. Here, the author covers a breadth of experiences and different realities and in doing so, presents the evidence that enables her to fulfil many of the book's objectives. For example, on the basis of this chapter, she is able to: tell the story of the everyday struggle of ordinary Maori; show that Maori who live outside their tribal areas and in Auckland affirm Maori ways of being and identities; and respond to the desire of Maori who feel excluded by the rhetoric of authenticity to be considered as much Maori as anybody else. This chapter is the heart of the book. Many Maori will recognise themselves in the experiences of the whanau whose lives are being told. The richness of this chapter is due to the author's impressive data set, which was collected over nearly 2 years of fieldwork. The author was in Aotearoa from February 2001 to the end of June 2002, from January to April 2005, in December 2008, and again from January to March 2011. …
