Banker's holds true on both sides of the Atlantic Ocean. If you think headlines like How YOU can survive NEW GREAT DEPRESSION: Why you should spend all your money BEFORE the banks collapse and Scumbag Millionaires: Shamed Bank Bosses 'Sorry' For Crisis come from American newspapers, think again. Both headlines come reproduced from British newspapers in the fold-out booklet for Document's riposte to our Bankers HBOS [Halifax Bank of Scotland] and their profligate ways. Even though the HBOS is now part of Lloyds TSB financial group, British companies and account holders still seethe at the bankers who brought about the 2008/2009 credit crunch. (1) Seventeen of the 23 selections come from the Document catalog, leading off with Blind Alfred Reed's Money Craving (recorded December 1929) and Barbecue Bob's We Sure Got Hard Times Now (1930). few rarities are included, such as Brother Fullbosom's A Sermon on a Silver Dollar from a later Paramount session in 1931, and the Edgewater Crows' No Bonus Blues (from the ARC labels recording sessions in Hattiesburg, MS in July 1936). Added from Gary Atkinson's personal collection are Trying to Make a Living by Bobby Saxton with guitarist Earl Hooker (Bea and Baby label, recorded 1960) and Broke and Hungry by Hop Wilson (Goldband label, 1958). Had this CD been the final issue from Document, it would have been a defiant last fight. idea of a jug band may now seem quaint if not laughable. But during the 1920s and 1930s, some of the best blues musicians were to be found in jug bands: Gus Cannon, Noah Lewis, Will Shade, Jab Jones, Jed Davenport, and Will Weldon (later Casey Bill Weldon). Oddly, many names of the jug players are forgotten, but Charlie Polk of the Jug Band is one to remember. Document's latest 5000-series issue and its revision of a 6000-series disc help keep the jug legacy complete on CD. Harp and Jug Blowers: 1929-1939 was originally issued in 1992 under the first Document owner Johnny Parth's supervision. It contained eight titles from Little Buddy Doyle, four by Minnie Wallace, eleven by Jed Davenport (two of them with vocals by Joe Williams), and Take 2 of Memphis Jug Blues (Victor matrix 37943-2, 1927) by the Jug Band. For this new edition, Gary Atkinson moved the Jug Band track to Document DOCD 5685 (reviewed below), and removed the two Davenport sides with Joe Williams (which I hope will be placed in a future Document issue). Then the three sides that Minnie Wallace recorded in 1929 with the Jug Band (Dirty Butter and the two takes of The Old Folks Started It, with take 1 being issued here for the first time) are brought over from Jug Band Volume 2 (Document DOCD 5022). recently discovered Slick Capers Blues (issued previously only on Too Late Too Late Volume 1 [Document 5150]) rounds out the Little Buddy Doyle section. main attraction, however, is Jed Davenport, a harmonica player who had enough virtuosity to record an instrumental version of the 16-measure insult song The Dirty Dozens (which he did in 1930 for Vocalion). His Street Jug Band sides for Vocalion are among the chief treasures of jug band music. whole CD was digitally remastered; the tracks for which the sources were in excellent shape sound better than ever--especially Davenport's Beale Street Breakdown--although those for which the discs were worn fare not so well. …
