ISBN 978-0-9829-1558-5.These two volumes are the latest in a series on Nunavik, or Quebec north of 55°N. Previous volumes have covered: Stories & Tales (1), Way of Life (2), Health (3), Children & Youth (4), and Environment Parts (5 and 6). They contain in total about 120 short articles, selected from 'pieces' published by the Makivik Corporation between 1975 and 2010 in its newsletters and magazines - Taqlarit, Atvaqnik, and especially the Makivik Magazine. Part I averages six pages per article, while Part II averages four. There are some substantive articles in each, but also many small comments of one page or less in length. The Makivik Corporation was established under the James Bay and Northern Quebec Agreement (JBNQA) of 1975. It is responsible for the administration of Inuit lands in Nunavik, and for the use of compensation payments under JBNQA.The term nunavimmiut in the title is Inuktitut for an inhabitant ofNunavik, and the content of both volumes focuses on economic development projects and how Inuit communities are involved in them. A small minority of extracts also relate to Labrador, or Nunatsiavut. Readers unfamiliar with the geography of Nunavik and its indigenous communities may be worried about the use of place names in Inuktituk, as well as traditional English/French community names. Fortunately, one is spared the chore of continually consulting an atlas with English/French and Inuktitut spelling of place names, as both volumes contain an excellent map showing both, and there is the bonus of a coloured map in English/French/ Inuktituk on the beautifully designed dust covers. Each volume has a perceptive scenesetting Introduction: that of Vol. 7 is by Pita Aatami, former President of the Makivik Corporation, and that of Vol. 8 is by Neil Greig, an economist with 50 years' experience in economic development in the North. The latter is an excellent assessment of the economic prospects of the Inuit people who mostly live below the poverty level in an area where the cost of living is twice as high as the rest of Canada and twice the number of dependants rely on each wage earner. …
