Résumé
The present thesis focuses on thirty-seven official Almohad letters written in the 12th and 13th centuiries. The time of the Almohad Empire (1147-1268) has been a fascinating and rich period in the history of the Islamic West due mainly to two outstanding features: its specific political and religous doctrine and its unprecedented territorial expansion. The extant historical sources of the overwhelmingly Oriental origin which have been written down mostly after the decline of the Almohad dynasty draw a very blurred picture of its evenemental history and shed little light on the underlying structure of the Almohad society. The collection of the mentioned thirty-seven official Almohad documents was edited for the first time in 1941, but has remained largely unheeded in terms of scientific research since then. The letters offer an authentic and immediate insight into the Almohad history as well as into the ideological “lining” for many of the reported events. Thus, this collection enlarges the corpus of the authentic contemporary Almohad sources. In this thesis, seven official Almohad letters have been sorted out to be extensively focused on. Each of these documents is presented in a separate chapter. Their translation into German and the analysis of their historicity are complemented by and concluded with the summary of the results achieved. The concluding chapter is dedicated to the comprehensive interpretation of what has been inferred in the preceding chapters. The study is extended by two attachments: For the first time, all thirty-seven Almohad letters have been summarized in German. Furthermore, a completely novel collection of references concerning the Arabic figurative parlance of the official writings in the Western Muslim world is given. The objective of this second attachment is twofold: the disambiguation of many of the ambiguous formulations in the official Almohad letters and the creation of a reliable basis for the question, to which extent they are historic.
