The year 2017 marks five hundred years since beginnings of Protestant Reformation, a movement which both employed and incited formational hymns of church. The story, surely apocryphal, of Martin Luther nailing his 95 theses to door of All Saints' Church in Wittenberg, is an arresting starting point for a period of turmoil and change in Western church. Nevertheless, in exploring this theme for our 2017 conference, it is not this moment of ecclesial discord and rift that we celebrate, but rather rich body of congregational song which has emerged in ensuing years, a body of song which unites us across denominational and cultural lines. Accordingly, we will commemorate this significant anniversary by exploring a range of topics relating to Reformation hymnody: musical roots of Reformation movement, psalmody, musical poetics of post-Reformation liturgy, and how diverse cultures have received and mediated their hymnic inheritance in last five centuries. Five hundred years on, we invite you to explore with us how this sung heritage continues to speak to our changed and ever changing modern society.At same time, 2017 marks sesquicentennial of Canadian Confederation, our establishment as a nation, and so it is a fitting year for The Hymn Society to hold its conference in Canada. This year we will gather at Conrad Grebel University College in Kitchener-Waterloo, Ontario. Anniversary festivities will be held throughout year and will culminate with Canada Day celebrations during month of July; this would be a great time to consider extending your stay in the true North, strong and free.ARL those who wish to delve deeper can also attend their follow-up sectional.PlenariesPaul Westermeyer, FHS, will open conference with an ecumenically-minded contextualization of musical theology of Reformation, situating 16thcentury movement as part of life of whole church that came before and after. Karin Maag, specialist in history of worship and political history of Reformation, will join us from Calvin College. She will focus on Genevan and Reformation Psalters in context of significant changes in worship practice that occurred as a result of Reformation. Our third and final plenary will be delivered by J. R. Watson, editor of landmark Canterbury Dictionary of Hymnology, who joins us from Durham, England. He will discuss relationship of hymns to poetry, with special reference to American and Canadian hymnody of nineteenth century and after.Festivals and PrayerOur opening festival, exploring theological threads of Reformation, will be led by Michael Burkhardt, in collaboration with Paul Westermeyer, FHS. Michael is an experienced composer, performer, and teacher, and a dynamic leader of hymn festivals. The second hymn festival will explore psalmody, led by Hymn Society member-at-large Cynthia Wilson, founding director of Center for Music and Worship in Black Church at Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary and a member of The Hymn Society Executive Committee. The third festival, led by Andrew Donaldson, will trace global perspectives on legacy of Reformation, through idea of modern-day Geneva as a bustling crossroads for congregational song. …
