Dry meat and gender: the absence of Chipewyan ritual for the regulation of hunting and animal numbers
Notice bibliographique
Résumé
The northern hunting cultures of the boreal forest of Canada provide a special and significant case for the development and testing of theories about hunting and gathering societies. From east of Hudson Bay to the Alaska border, a distance of several thousand kilometers, these cultures form a continuous belt of hunter-gatherers that are still the almost exclusive residents of their traditional subsistence areas and which have extensive, sometimes exclusive, access to the subsistence resources. These cultures have long been in contact with the larger Canadian society and have had an even longer intermittent commercial interaction with its predecessors; there has been adroit adaptation to and exploitation of opportunities provided by the technology and social systems of Western culture, leading to often dramatic change. Yet in spite of this contact and change, the cultures have proven remarkably resistant to subordination by, and incorporation within, the larger society ( Tanner 1979 ). Even if the underlying factor in their resilience should prove to be nothing beyond the lack of massive face-to-face co-residential contact, stemming from the unsuitability of their land for agricultural or extractive operations requiring large residential labor pools, their current situation approximates the pre-agricultural condition of exclusive control of productive land and resources by hunter-gatherer peoples better than anywhere else in the contemporary world.
