32 Healthy Active Living for Children: A Resident Education Module

Obesity is increasingly being recognized as an emerging children's health issue reaching epidemic proportions worldwide. Health care providers, including pediatricians, need to be well informed of the impact of obesity on the physical, emotional and psychosocial well being of Canada's children and their families. The Canadian Pediatric Society with Health Canada has developed a Healthy Active Living strategy for children and youth which outlines physical activity guidelines and recommendations to decrease sedentary behaviours. To date, education efforts have been targeted towards practicing pediatricians. The goal of this phase of the project is to educate Pediatric residents on the Healthy Active Living strategy with emphasis on the following: (1) increasing awareness of the childhood obesity epidemic, (2) identification and diagnosis of children at risk for obesity, and (3) awareness of strategies for further investigation and management of affected children. The program will be piloted at the University of Ottawa and involves two 3-hour long education modules with focus on history-taking, physical exam skills and management plans. Through a combination of didactic and small group sessions and role-play scenarios, residents will learn to uncover specific aspects of nutrition, physical activity and sedentary behaviour, calculation and plotting of body mass index (BMI) and identifying co-morbidities such as signs of insulin resistance. The modules also review suitable preliminary investigations and multidisciplinary consultations for obesity management and treatment. Resident and program evaluations will be done through a combination of pre/post multiple choice questions, satisfaction surveys and an OSCE station. The ultimate goal will be to deliver this program to all Pediatric residents across Canada. By introducing obesity screening and prevention strategies at the postgraduate training level, future pediatricians will be better equipped to approach this important health concern with their patients and families in order to successfully advocate for their well being.
