Abstract Brachiopods of the Suborder Productidina vary in spine morphology; two end-members are (a) multiple short spines, and (b) few long spines. Although the short and highly dense spine morphology was very common, its function has not been tested. We analyzed the effects of the short spine morphology on shell stability and scour production on a moving substrate (coarse sand; a frequent substrate for these taxa), in a recirculating flume. The experiment used accurately weighted 3D-printed models of the Devonian genus Praewaagenoconcha, and simulated substrate and flow conditions in which this taxon had lived. Three spine conditions were tested: (a) spines on both valves (as observed on Praewaagenoconcha); (b) spines only on the ventral valve; and (c) aspinose. Thirty trials of each model were run in a recirculating flume: fifteen with the model lying fully on top of the substrate (epifaunal), and fifteen with the model's hingeline flush against the substrate, with the ventral valve pushed into the sand (quasi-infaunal). Maximum flow velocity was 0.70 m/s. There was no difference in performance between the fully spinose and ventrally-spined model, suggesting that the dorsal spines do not affect stability. Models in the quasi-infaunal position resisted transport and overturning better than epifaunally-positioned models (24/45 epifaunal specimens were transported vs. 4/45 quasi-infaunal specimens). Spinose models resisted transport and scour more effectively than aspinose models, as best observed in the quasi-infaunal, hingeline downstream position, where the aspinose model was reoriented unfavourably in 4/5 trials at 0.48 m/s, while the spinose model remained stable, even during ripple formation. In other quasi-infaunal positions, all models remained stable, but the scour around the aspinose model was up to 3× deeper than that around the spined model, increasing the risk of destabilization. Productidines possessing the short-multiple-spine morphology could have lived quasi-infaunally on arenaceous, mobile substrates, as they would have maintained stability, even at high velocities. Possessing spines may have helped productidines exploit a niche unavailable to their spineless counterparts.
