Is sex wasted on the young? asks the initial character in the video Tonight's the Night, a production of Baycrest Geriatric Center of Toronto. As she proceeds to tell the viewers about her rendezvous with her husband at a secluded lake site, her description of later-life intimacy and the affection, comfort, companionship, and sexuality she and her husband share is typical of the discussions of many of her contemporaries in the videos reviewed here. Similarly, a fair number of Internet websites offer information and resources pertinent to close relationships in later life, at times dealing specifically with aging issues, and at times simply incorporating elders' experiences into more general resource topics. Additionally, the organizations and print sources noted here at least peripherally address or refer to these issues. The videotapes and websites are grouped by category and are listed in order of my perception of their usefulness to practitioners, to students and teachers of gerontology, to practitioners in social work and other human-services fields, and to general readers. These resources are not an exhaustive list; rather, they reflect a sampling of media that highlight the diverse issues of intimacy in later life. EDUCATIONAL VIDEOS A number of educational videos are available. Tonight's the Night. Fanlight Productions (1995). In this video, three couples discuss their intimate lives in a straightforward, candid manner and with humor; one has the impression that the couples sense that they are pioneers in bringing the topic of adult intimacy to light for an aging population that is very interested in such matters. Sexuality and Aging. Nebraska Projects Unit, University of Nebraska (1987). This video contains a somewhat clinical review of sexual processes combined with a very human picture of physiological changes, attitudes, beliefs, and age bias with regard to sexuality in older persons. This video would be especially useful for medical personnel and students or others addressing sexual concerns or questions posed by elders. A cohort perspective is dearly presented, including some taboos and inhibitions of earlier generations. Portraits of Age. First Run Icarus Film (1994). This video presents an excellent examination of the experiences of aging in several different cultural settings. Beginning on the west coast of India, the video traces attitudes and beliefs surrounding aging throughout various parts of the world. Rather than focusing on sexual intimacy, this video examines the intimacies born of close contact in caregiving, the cultural beliefs surrounding intimacy among generations, and knowledge and beliefs about the self in various cultures. This film is a must for students of aging today. Silent Pioneers. Pioneer Films (1984). The video offers a look at gay and lesbian relationships throughout the life course by presenters who seem well aware of the potential impact of this pioneering work. It is presented in a manner that is factual and informative and notes the obstacles and oppression encountered by many gay and lesbian people throughout their lives-and the enduring relationships that help them cope. Bubbeh Lee and Me. Open Eye Pictures (1996). The film presents a sensitive portrait of life in a nursing home and the friendship that develops between a woman and her grandson. Issues of aging, self-identity, alienation, and, finally, acceptance of the elders grandson's lifestyle and sexual orientation are handled sensitively and with insight. These aspects of adjustment and change in one's life are presented without emphasizing difference or discriminatory attitudes. Recommended for professional and general audiences. 100-Something. Films for the Humanities (1999). This video more generally addresses various aspects of aging, although intimacy is part of the discussion, as are losses, anticipatory grief, and facing one's own mortality. …
