Simulation‐Based Energy Performance of Low‐Rise Buildings
Notice bibliographique
Résumé
Over the years, modeling and simulation have become conventional methods, tools and techniques that are used by engineers, building owners (managers), building tenants, and environment authorities to understand the behavior and characteristics of energy in buildings. In this chapter, a simulation-based parametric study on the thermal comfort and cooling performance of low-rise residential and commercial buildings is analyzed. The analysis was carried out in the hot arid climatic conditions of Qatar. The objectives were (i) to determine the influence of diurnal variation of the solar flux, changes in the ambient temperature profiles and the thermal inertia of the building energy system, and their effects on indoor air temperatures and space cooling, and (ii) to find ways of optimizing operations toward high-energy performance with respect to cooling energy. Assessment of an existing case study villa showed that simple non-capital-intensive design changes can improve the cooling performance of low-rise residential villas and thus improve human thermal comfort standards. On the other hand, variations in performance measures associated with the cooling performance of low-rise commercial buildings were noted. In particular, energy savings obtained through scheduling district cooling in commercial buildings highlights the importance of implementing optimally scheduled district cooling resources. The study shows that simulation modeling is an effective tool that can be used to identify energy saving measures, which if implemented can significantly contribute to high-energy performance in low-rise residential and commercial buildings.
