Beyond High-Status Expatriation: Crossing the Boundaries of Mobility For 'Other' Global Workers
Notice bibliographique
Résumé
The conference theme asks some big questions: How can organizations contribute to the betterment of society through elevating the health and well-being of those who live in it? What role can organizations play in positively affecting the physical, psychological, social, and financial health of individuals, groups, communities, countries, regions, or global society? Key to being able to do that is ensuring that our research covers all people in organizations and recognizing that all play a part. We cannot answer the big questions if we exclude people who do not fit into our usual conceptions and assumptions about who it is that organizations employ. Specifically, we need to encompass all levels of skill, hierarchy, and status. In this symposium, we address this issue in terms of international human resource management. The symposium will argue that despite their large numbers, we lack a comprehensive understanding of the specific challenges faced by four types of 'other' global workers - low- status expatriates, migrants, expatriate international business travellers, and short-term assignees - all members of the global workforce whose lives can be improved by organizational actions that includes them in employers’ global human resource policies. We bring together a diverse group of international scholars with the goal of clarifying constructs, exploring boundaries, and widening the debates about international mobility in the management field. The four papers to be presented focus on these under-researched aspects of internationally mobile workers, with the goal of contributing to understanding their situation and concerns, their management issues, and how improving their health and well-being will contribute to the betterment of society.
