An installment in a Routledge series focused on studies in religion and politics, the present volume brings together fourteen academics from the United States, UK, and Europe (mostly Swedish scholars) who have contributed eleven chapters dealing with both (1) the role of religion within the United Nations system and (2) the functioning of UN policies and norms within nation-states. The result is a somewhat eclectic, yet highly informative collection of essays. Over the arc of the book, we learn of the growing spaces accorded to religion at the UN and various modes of influence its international norms exercise at the intersections of religion and state. For example, Jeffrey Hayes’ chapter on the UN Alliance of Civilizations demonstrates how, in accord with Samuel Huntington’s civilizational framing that was often marked by religiosity, inter-religious dialogue was activated for its potential as a bridge to avoid a cleavage along civilization fractures. For her part, Katherine Marshall, in two separate chapters, employs her insider perspective to unfold some of the many roles that religion has played on the UN stage. Marshall also delves into how the UN has been constructed and critiqued from religious perspectives in the United States, including as having ambition for world government shaded in apocalyptic terms. Another noteworthy chapter by Ragnhild Johnsrud Zorgati traces the development in the post-revolutionary Tunisian constitution (2014), which avoids the language of Shariah while creatively naming Islam as part of the socio-cultural heritage of the country in its opening clause. In this light, Zorgati convincingly argues for the constitution of the second Tunisian republic as being entangled with UN norms to the benefit of a broadening of its political community in a fashion that both circumvents the traditionally influential Maliki School of Islamic jurisprudence by appealing directly to the Qur’an and incorporates international human rights language.
