Résumé
As some of the earliest examples of fully terrestrial fauna, members of the ancient arachnid order Trigonotarbida are important for understanding the process of terrestrialization in arthropods and the ecology of early terrestrial environments dating back at least to the late Silurian. Despite this importance, most research on trigonotarbids has focused on examples from Europe while roughly one quarter of their North American counterparts have been left unidentified past order. This has led to noticeably more families and nearly three times the number of trigonotarbid genera recognized from Europe compared to North America even though they shared similar stratigraphic and geographic ranges during the Devonian and Carboniferous when both continents were joined to form the minor supercontinent Euramerica. In order to obtain a better understanding of the diversity of North American trigonotarbids, research and database entries on known examples were compiled, specimens were loaned from museums in the United States and Canada, and visits were made to several of the largest museum collections. Upon examination of North American specimens, previously unreported trigonotarbid localities in Indiana and Oklahoma, both middle Pennsylvanian (Desmoinesian) emergent swamp cyclothem deposits, were recognized and three trigonotarbid specimens were described. One specimen belonging to the eophrynid assemblage Dunlop & Brauckmann, 2006 (either of the family Eophrynidae Karsch, 1882 or Kreischeriidae Haase, 1890) was described from Indiana and represents the first arachnid fossils to be imaged using an MLT scanner. Two trigonotarbids, of the genus Aphantomartus Pocock, 1911 and Anthracomartus Karsch, 1882, were described from Oklahoma, thereby expanding the recognized biogeographic ranges of both respective families and genera. A number of other, undescribed specimens were found to have the potential to expand the known diversity and biogeographic ranges of North American trigonotarbids.
