2018 AAP Murray Davidson Award

Since its establishment in 1989, the American Academy of Pediatrics Murray Davidson Award recognizes an outstanding clinician, educator, and scientist who has made significant contributions to the field of pediatric gastroenterology, hepatology, and nutrition. David A. Piccoli, Chief of the Division of Gastroenterology, Hepatology, and Nutrition at The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP), is the illustrious recipient of the 2018 Murray Davidson Award. He is a graduate of Johns Hopkins University (1975) and Harvard Medical School (1979). He was a Resident and Chief Resident in Pediatrics from 1979 to 1983 at Children's Hospital, Boston. He completed his clinical and research fellowships at CHOP in Philadelphia from 1983 to 1986. He became Training Director, Section Chief, and, in 1998, Division Chief. He is also the Director of the Fred and Suzanne Biesecker Pediatric Liver Center and holds the Biesecker Professorship and Endowed Chair in Pediatrics at CHOP and Penn. In addition to Hepatology, Dr Piccoli is active in the Lustgarten Center for Pediatric Motility and the Frontier Program in Inflammatory Bowel Disease. He has been an Associate Chair of the Department of Pediatrics since 1996, with responsibilities ranging from Outreach to Information Technology. He is also the codirector of the Penn-CHOP Joint Center for Digestive, Liver and Pancreatic Diseases. Dr Piccoli has authored more than 100 articles, 40 chapters, 130 research abstracts, and edited 4 books on areas of pediatric gastroenterology, hepatology, and nutrition. He has served in NASPGHAN on the Training and Education Committee, The Finance Committee, and on the Executive Council.Dr Piccoli's academic and leadership record truly represents a timeline of excellence. He is distinguished further by qualities that make him so deserving of this award. Dr Piccoli has a love for patients and a clinical acumen that are unparalleled. This is demonstrated by his recent induction into the Academy of Master Clinicians at the University of Pennsylvania. His notable enthusiasm for patient care has not abated and continues today. At any time, colleagues and trainees can go to his office (or call him from afar) to discuss a complex patient and he delights in making sense out of chaos. His enthusiasm for teaching residents, fellows, and faculty (and patients and families) is palpable and clearly brings him, and others, great joy. His scientific contributions have been numerous and a highlight among these has been the major advances in Alagille syndrome that he has led. His interest in this condition arose from keen clinical observation and a true love for caring for these patients. His comprehensive approach to Alagille syndrome patients and families is a model for chronic disease care. His contributions led to the discovery of both disease genes and the substantial scientific discoveries that have followed thereafter. Dr Piccoli is considered by many the “ultimate mentor.” He has actively participated in the training of more than 125 fellows. He has created mechanisms to ensure that the division provides excellent preparation for the future leaders of the field. However, his mentorship extends beyond reviewing grants or editing manuscripts. He is well known to those in his sphere as an advisor, guru, guide, protector, confidante, facilitator, fixer, coach, teacher, and leader. In short, he supports those around him in all spheres of their lives. Furthermore, this care of others extends beyond physician trainees and colleagues, to nurses, nurse practitioners, administrative colleagues, and the cleaners on the ward. His ability to value all those around him is truly inspirational. During Dr Piccoli's tenure as Chief, the Division has tripled in size, and has vastly expanded its clinical and research missions in gastrointestinal, hepatic, pancreatic, and nutritional disorders. It cannot be emphasized enough that David's reach and legacy extend beyond the Division at CHOP. He has consistently gone above and beyond to advance the needs of children with gastrointestinal and liver disease; he has committed himself to the education and well-being of trainees and others; he has advanced science; and he has created a family who share his vision of excellence. He is a truly charismatic leader and a very worthy recipient of the Murray Davidson Award.
