29 Inspiring Lessons from Physician Appointees of the Order of Canada

The Order of Canada (OOC) is one of Canada’s highest civilian honours. Individuals are appointed to the OOC for their profound impact on Canadian society. There have been 18 physicians who have been affiliated with one Canadian Pediatric Academic Health Sciences Center (PAHSC) whose careers and accomplishments can be evaluated to inspire others who are involved in the care of children in Canada and internationally. The objective of this study was to reflect on the inspirational stories about the careers of individuals who have contributed greatly to the field of pediatrics in Canada and internationally. The secondary objective was to develop common themes from these stories to influence the career development of trainees and faculty in early stages of their careers. This is a qualitative prospective study of a convenience sample of the first 6 of the 14 living OOC appointees who are all current or prior faculty members in the Department of Pediatrics at a single PAHSC. Subjects were interviewed using a semi-structured interview that explored their careers and transcripts were coded using NVivo by two team members to identify common themes. All 6 physician OOC appointees reported enjoying working with a multidisciplinary team and shared the belief that teamwork led to better patient care. They described being truly passionate about their professional work, whether it was inventing a product, educating others, or building a pediatric department, and expressed gratitude for the opportunity to be in their professional roles despite the challenges they faced during their careers. Furthermore, they all described being passionate about mentorship and teaching students and trainees. Finally, they all emphasized the importance of humility despite their significant professional achievements. This project shares inspirational stories to students, trainees, and practicing pediatricians in Canada as it outlines the shared values of remarkable physicians who were all appointed to the Order of Canada through an exploration of their careers and accomplishments.
