War-affected refugee youth in Quebec: exploring youth agency and the role of alternative support networks in the resettlement process

Résumé
The purpose of this study is to explore the role of informal support networks in the resettlement experiences of war-affected children and youth living in two Quebec cities: Montreal and Saint-Hyacinthe. Theorized here as a form of social capital, informal associations between war-affected children and youth and their families, peers and other significant individuals have the potential of providing the former group with financial assistance as well as emotional support in the form of ongoing advice and guidance. Contrary to previous notions of war-affected children and youth as victims and in need of assistance, this study adopts components of social capital theory in order to better explore their resources and agency in the resettlement process. Based on interviews with 8 youth, this study highlights the different components involved in the creation of social capital and in their resettlement experiences. War-affected youth were found to initially rely on familial ties for guidance and support, access additional opportunities through extra-familial ties, create alternative support networks and directly engage in the maintenance of those social networks over time. This thesis highlighted the way in which war-affected youth actively utilized social networks in overcoming the different resettlement challenges they faced upon arrival. The latter has direct implications for social work as it shed light into the need to adopt a different view on this population by assessing their strengths and the importance of informal support networks during their resettlement. Finally, the findings of this thesis have implications at a policy and research level, describing the effects of the current regionalization policy adopted in Quebec and beginning to address research gaps on this particular population respectively.
