Discourses of Denial: Mediations of Gender, Race, and Violence. Yasmin Jiwani Vancouver: UBC Press, 2006. 255 pp. $85.00 hc. Deftly combining post-colonial theory, poignant prose, and passionate activism, Jiwani tackles issues of multiculturalism, racism, sexism, and sensational media representations of ethnic minorities within the Canadian context. While these issues have been debated for years, Jiwani's approach is refreshingly different, in that it jolts the reader out of complacency regarding Canada's role as a tolerant and inclusive nation. The book aims reveal the ways in which the interface among race, gender, and are misrepresented in the media by challenging the insidious distinction between the White (capitalized as Jiwani explains, to rupture the normativity associated with the social construction of race; p. xix) dominant majority constituted as real Canadians, and the Others, i.e., people of colour, who by virtue of their race or residency status are marginalized as deviant, exotic, and incorrigibly inferior. The book is divided into seven chapters, and is composed of four sections. The first section, consisting of two chapters, focusses on establishing a contextual framework for the process of racialization in Canada, where the White body is valued and normalized, resulting in the violent subjugation of those who appear different. Jiwani also describes the use of the media as a vehicle of expression by the dominant elite, which reproduces stereotypical information that shapes public perceptions of ethnic minority groups as threatening national identity and security. Given these racialized dichotomies, Jiwani provides a scathing critique of Canadian multiculturalism that highlights the pernicious transformation of cultural identities into racial categories. In the second section, chapters 3 and 4, Jiwani explores racialized representations in the media through critical analysis of two high-profile criminal cases in Canada: the brutal 1997 murder of Reena Virk, and the 1996 Vernon massacre. These analyses are made all the more remarkable through Jiwani's references personal court watch notes which examine issues around race and witness credibility (the Virk case), and by exploring strategic cultural attributions in media construals of gender-based violence. Both chapters conclude with a discussion of campaign interventions undertaken by Jiwani with allied feminist organizations educate the public about the biased media coverage surrounding these cases. Chapters 5 and 6 constitute the third section, in which Jiwani examines various risk factors and implications of ethnic minority women's experiences with racism and sexism using data collected through participation action research. Jiwani first explains the methodology of participatory research, and then discusses the findings of a study on the interpersonal and nature of racism as experienced by Canadian girls and young women in school. The sixth chapter also explores the systemic nature of racist violence (p. 144), this time within the Canadian health-care system, by analyzing results obtained through focus group interviews with immigrant women of colour and service providers. …
