Captive Histories: English, French, and Native Narratives of the 1704 Deerfield Raid
Notice bibliographique
Résumé
Captive Histories: English, French, and Native Narratives of the 1704 Deerfield Raid. Edited by Evan Haefeli and Kevin Sweeney. Amherst and Boston: University of Massachusetts Press, 2006. 298 pages. $22.95 (paperback). The combined French and Indian attack upon the western Massachusetts village of Deerfield in 1704 was, at the time, the most devastating assault upon an Anglo-American settlement since Metacomet's War (1675-76). However, it tends to be consumed in the overall narrative of imperial and frontier conflict that was Queen Anne's War (1702-13), which itself is far overshadowed by the so-called French and Indian War (17541763). The secondary literature pertaining to the raid is dominated by John Demos 's The Unredeemed Captive: A Family Story from Early America (New York, 1994) and Haefeli's and Sweeney's own Captors and Captives: The 1704 French and Indian Raid on Deerfield (Amherst, 2003). A smattering of monographs and articles touch lightly upon the raid and the experiences of captivity endured by English colonists, but only in a general way as they explore other issues concerning Euro-American and Native American relations in the late seventeenth and early eighteenth century frontier. Captive Histories: English, French, and Native Narratives of the 1704 Deerfield Reid (ed. by Haefeli and Sweeney) seeks to build upon the work begun by Captors and Captives to assert the greater significance of the Deerfield Raid; they present a wealth of primary source documents pertaining specifically to the raid, most of them previously unpublished. Included here are English, French, Mohawk and Abenaki accounts that exhibit as many facets of the larger conflict as possible, but concentrating upon the raid itself and the experiences of those who conducted it as well as those who suffered as a result. The most familiar of these narratives is undoubtedly Rev. John Williams' The Redeemed Captive Returning to Zion (1707) which, like Mary Rowlandson's The Sovereignty and Goodness of God (1682), served as an object lesson to New Englanders searching for the greater meaning behind collective hardship and distress. Williams and his family were taken in the raid, and during the forced march to Canada he lost his wife and four of their five children. The surviving child, Eunice Williams, was adopted into a Kahnawake Mohawk family and later refused to be ransomed back to her English family. She became the subject of much pitying discussion and gossip for decades following (and the subject of Demos 'monograph). …
